Improvisation is a key element of playing the drums.
By practicing common fill patterns and looping simple grooves, they can become simple building blocks for creating ideas on the fly. Practicing rudiments (paradiddles, flams and rolls) can not just improve your rudiment skills, but can also be helpful in creating a fill by moving them around the kit.
Improvisation can mean building your creativity and musical confidence. It encourages you to explore your own ideas and you’ll start to notice patterns and fills you naturally lean towards. Also, it can make practice more fun! Sitting down and playing freely lets you have fun while still improving 🤟🏻🥁

Hey! I’m Ewan – drum tutor from east Ayrshire and full-time music nerd 🥁
I’m 23 and have been playing drums for over 12 years now. It all started in primary school when I got picked to join the percussion section of the school wind band, and I haven't looked back since.
Since then, I’ve played in various styles of bands, ranging from wind bands and jazz bands to indie rock bands. I’ve performed at school concerts, community gigs, and festivals (including a platinum award-winning performance at the Scottish Concert Band Festival 🎉).
Studying music was all I ever wanted to do in high school. After achieving an A in Advanced Higher music, I went on to music at Riverside Music College, Busby, where I got my HND. After those 2 years at college, I decided to continue my studies by going on to study an Honours degree course in Popular Music through UHI (University of the Highlands and Islands), where I achieved a 2.1. My years at college and university were where I really found my passion for teaching. My college Graded Unit focused on private lessons, and my years at university focused on shadowing an instrumental music teacher in an educational workplace and conducting an online styles workshop. As well as teaching privately, I currently tutor at Riverside Music College (thanks to my graded unit) and Mango Music, Giffnock.
Whether you’re new to drumming or already playing and want to improve, I’d love to help you out. For beginners, we’ll start with the basics using Trinity’s introductory book, getting used to reading drum music and playing different styles like rock and ballads. Then we’ll work our way up through the Trinity Rock and Pop graded books, looking at more different styles, rhythms and techniques to playing real songs like Uptown Funk, Another One Bites the Dust (Grade 1), Song 2 and Under the Bridge (Grade 2). For intermediate learners, we will be having a look at the grade 3 and 4 pieces from both the Rock and Pop and the more technical Trinity College London book. As well as learning new pieces, we will be learning different rudiments such as paradiddles, buzz rolls, flams and many more. If you’re already drumming and want a bit of guidance, I’m happy to jump in and work with whatever you’re doing!
Outside of teaching, I’m into jogging, football, travelling, and going to gigs – but nothing beats sitting behind the kit😎
If you're interested in lessons or want to chat about drums, feel free to message me! Let’s make some noise 👊🥁
