Online safety advice for families for the summer holidays

Dear parents and carers,
With the summer holidays approaching, many children will be looking forward to spending more of their free time online — and for lots of children, that means gaming.

Online games can be a brilliant way for children to have fun, connect with friends and build confidence, but it’s important they know how to play safely and understand the rules of the spaces they’re in.

Internet Matters offer free guidance to help you support your child with online gaming, including how to understand community rules, avoid warnings or bans, and start positive conversations about the games, apps and videos they enjoy.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) - Be Water Aware

Activities in or around water can be a fun pastime, especially during warmer months, but around half of accidental drownings happen to people who didn’t intend to go into the water. Between 2000 and 2025 HFRS attended 120 water related incidents and twenty-one lives were tragically claimed during this period.

It's important to know how to stay safe, and how to help if you come across someone in trouble in the water:

Phone 999 straight away to get help. Ask for the fire service – never enter the water to attempt a rescue.
Tell the person to stay calm and float on their back.
Throw something that floats if it is safe to do so.
