As the spring term comes to an end this week, we’ve been taking a little moment in the Hub to celebrate our Young People.

Every Young Person is being invited to chose a mug with an affirmation that speaks to them (plus a little Easter treat to enjoy!). It’s a simple way to pause, reflect and remind them how capable and valued they are.

We’re so proud of all they’ve achieved this term, particularly as it’s been Functional Skills assessments season, and can’t wait to see what’s ahead next term. For now, we hope our Young People enjoy a well-earned break.

This week marks 3 years of FYI 🎉

As it’s half term, we celebrated a little early at the Hub last week with a birthday treat station - a small exception to our usual focus on balanced, nutritious snacks. Young People were invited to choose a treat and take part in an FYI quiz to test their knowledge.

Some of the questions encouraged them to explore the Hub, learn more about our values and speak with Mentors and Tutors they don’t usually work with, creating new conversations and connections across the team.

The three highest scores will receive a small prize when everyone returns from half term next week. A lovely way to celebrate how far we’ve come and the community we continue to build together. 💚

Last week marked a huge milestone for FYI as we delivered our first ever educational residential trip, taking seven young people to Krakow, Poland, supported on a 1:1 basis by our team.

For many, this was their first time travelling without a caregiver, navigating a busy airport, experiencing a new culture and braving temperatures of -9°C (which felt like -16!). They showed incredible resilience during our time spent in Poland.

The trip was an extension of their English learning, bringing The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas book which they’ve been reading with their tutors to life through a guided visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau, alongside time exploring the city and experiencing local culture (including sampling some mocktails).

This opportunity was earned by young people who have been working hard, engaging positively with their programmes and staying committed to their timetables as they prepare to sit their Functional Skills English and Maths next month.

We are incredibly proud of how they approached what was a powerful and emotional experience. Opportunities like this help build confidence, broaden horizons and bring learning to life. We’re really looking forward to creating more experiences like this for our young people in the future.

💻 + ✏️ = Learning That Works

Here’s one of our Young People tackling times tables on a laptop - because sometimes, technology just makes learning click. Don’t worry, we haven’t completely ditched good old paper and pen, but at FYI, we like to use the tools that help each Young Person thrive.

Our Tutors are experts at understanding what works for each individual, whether that’s a screen, a notebook, or a bit of both and tailoring every session to bring out their best.

For us, we’re all about using the right tools for the right learner, not following a set formula.

Last week, The Lounge at the Hub was filled with festive energy as our Young People celebrated the end of term with a range of Christmas activities 🎄

From festive games and pin the nose on the reindeer, to a very popular hot chocolate station - and even a surprise appearance from a Mentor’s cat (specially requested by one of our Young People!) - the Hub became a place full of laughter, connection and shared moments.

Hosting these activities were about more than seasonal fun. They created space for our Young People to engage socially with their Mentors and Tutors, build confidence and strengthen relationships in a relaxed and supportive environment. Seeing everyone chatting, laughing and getting involved together was a lovely reminder of how powerful these moments can be.

A huge thank you to our Young People Support Coordinator, Danielle, who planned every detail and created such a warm, festive atmosphere in the Hub. And shout-out to Delarose Events for the fabulous balloon display.

A wonderful way to close the Autumn term ✨

Taking a moment to spotlight on one of our incredibly talented Young People ✨

Outside of her sessions at FYI, you’ll usually find her in the dance studio - training, creating and even teaching other young people as part of her Duke of Edinburgh volunteering.

We’ve seen her confidence grow so much since joining us, and watching her step into opportunities like this has been such a pleasure for us to see. Her dedication, creativity and drive speak for themselves… and we have a feeling they’ll make a real impact as part of her application for The BRIT School.

Let’s introduce you to Dune - a room at the FYI Hub helped shaped by the Young People who use it every day.

Last academic year, we asked what would help them feel comfortable and focused during their tuition sessions. They shared ideas, specific touches they hoped for and small details that would make a difference.

Those ideas became the foundation of Dune where they can see that their voices mattered and their input shaped the room they learn in today. Watch as Leeroy shows you around.

A snapshot of learning at the FYI Hub 📚

Here’s a moment captured during an English tuition session a couple of weeks back - a Young Person fully engaged in their reading and writing practice. You might have already noticed, the task is themed around Roblox.

This wasn’t by chance. It was an intentional choice by Rosie, one of our Tutors, who understands just how important it is to meet each Young Person where they’re at, especially those with specific SEN profiles. When learning feels relevant, enjoyable and linked to their interests, it becomes something they want to engage with.

At FYI, it’s not only our timetables that are tailored. Our team carefully shapes each activity so that it resonates with the Young Person in front of them. When a task feels personal and meaningful, confidence grows and that sense of “I can do this” starts to take root.

It’s these moments that remind us why a bespoke approach matters so much. ✨

What started as one Tutor’s idea has quickly been making its mark across the Hub.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas has made its way into several of our 1:1 English sessions and it’s sparked something special. As our Young People arrive and leave the Hub, we’ve overheard them sharing thoughts, comparing chapters and asking each other how far they’ve got.

It’s become an informal book club - completely organic, led by the Young People and a great reminder of how powerful stories can be in bringing peers together.

We’re excited to start showing you around each of the one-to-one tuition rooms at the FYI Hub, starting with Forest. 🌿

This room was thoughtfully created to support Young People with SEN and in this video our founder Leeroy shares the intention behind the details.

It’s timeeee! We’ve officially gone festive at the FYI Hub.

We set up our Christmas tree last week, but instead of decorating it ourselves, we decided to leave it to the people the Hub was created for - our Young People.

Over the past week, they’ve been popping into The Lounge before or after their 1:1 tuition sessions to choose a decoration from the box and find the perfect place for it. A few even brought along the baubles they made during their arts & crafts enrichment session to add their own personal touch.

It’s a small moment, but one that really reflects what the FYI Hub is all about: creating a space that belongs to them, encouraging togetherness even though tuition is delivered 1:1 and embracing the festive season as a team.

Seeing the tree come to life through their choices and creativity has been such a good reminder of why these shared moments matter. 🎁✨
