Test Timing: The test is almost always held in September of Year 6.

Registration Window: This typically opens in the Spring of Year 5 and officially closes over the summer.

The Catch: If you miss that window, your child absolutely cannot sit the test.

2️⃣ Independent Schools

The Schools: This includes
prestigious institutions like Haberdashers’, Merchant Taylors’, and North London Collegiate.

The Deadlines: Registration deadlines are often a full year ahead of the actual assessment!

Early Action: Some schools have strict registration deadlines in Year 5 for assessments taking place in Year 6.

You are definitely not alone. It’s one of the most common frustrations we see.

Children who are incredibly articulate and great with numbers can suddenly feel completely lost and overwhelmed when faced with a page full of abstract shapes and sequences.

But here is the secret that completely changes the game:

NVR isn’t just random shapes—it’s a strict set of rules.

And mastering just ONE of those rules unlocks more than half of the paper! 🔓✨

Let’s break it down.
Most NVR questions come down to one of four key changes:

Reflection (Is it mirrored?)
Size Change (Did it get bigger or smaller?)

Shading Change (Did the color or pattern shift?)

Rotation (Did it turn?)

And out of these four, ROTATION is the absolute most common. 🔄

If your child looks at an NVR sequence and has no idea what is happening, teach them to pause, take a breath, and ask this one specific question first:

🗣️ “Has it rotated?”
Here is exactly how to train them to spot it:

1. Rule out the rest: Check that the shape hasn’t just moved across the box or flipped over.

2. Look for the clock hand: Tell them to imagine the shape is the hand of a clock. Has it turned? 🕒

3. Identify the movement: Is it moving clockwise or anticlockwise?

4. Calculate the degrees: Did it turn 90 degrees? 45 degrees? 180 degrees?
Once they spot that rotation pattern, the rest of the sequence almost always falls right into place, and they have solved the question! 🧠💡

The next time you sit down for NVR prep, don’t let them get overwhelmed by the whole image.
