Back on socials after an accidental two week break! 😅 But our practical science sessions have still been going!

Today our KS3 group were investigating the signs of chemical reactions 🧪 while our IGCSE chemists were getting prepared for their Rates of Reaction core practicals 📈

Our learners seem to be really enjoying the chemistry focus and I’m most definitely back in my happy place.

I’m absolutely gutted to have to cancel our iGCSE and KS3 sessions tomorrow (Thursday 20th Nov). The lurgy has well and truly taken me down (have kids, they said… 😅) and I’d hate to pass it on, plus I highly doubt I’ll be well enough to teach tomorrow.

So proud of our KS3 scientists yesterday ✨
They worked so hard to get to grips with unfamiliar equipment and new types of measurements — all those little moments of “wait, how does this work?” turning into “I’ve got it!” 🙌

These foundations matter. Every careful reading, every repeat measurement, every question asked… it all builds the confidence and practical skills they’ll need for more advanced investigations later this year.

📏 KS3 Focus: Mastering Measurements

This week we’re slowing things down and getting really confident with the basics. Accurate measurements are the backbone of every practical we’ll do. If we can’t measure well, we can’t trust our data or build solid conclusions.

We’re practising:
• Reading equipment properly
• Choosing the right tool
• Reducing errors
• Recording data like a scientist

Strong skills now mean smoother, more meaningful experiments later.

We’ve made this change after feedback from families who couldn’t make Wednesdays — and we’re so pleased to open up the opportunity for more young scientists to get involved.

Where it all began 💫
Eight years at the University of Bristol - four for my MSci and another four for my PhD in Chemistry 🔬

But my love for science started long before that… back in Year 10, when everything suddenly clicked.
Mr Wood’s lessons were full of curiosity, laughter and a bit of chaos (screaming jelly babies, ethanol fires, liberal use of the alkali metals and just one ceiling tile fire😅).

That spark he lit has never gone out and it’s the same spark I hope to pass on through Izzy’s Home Ed Science.

Our practicals might be safer these days 👀, but the joy of discovery, creativity and curiosity is still at the heart of everything we do 💡
