Bare root season series - Choosing the right trees

Choosing the right tree is about much more than picking a species you like.
Before ordering your bare-root trees, it’s worth thinking about the conditions they’ll be growing in.
What’s your soil like?
Clay, sandy, wet, dry, acidic or alkaline soils will all suit different species.
How exposed is the site?
Wind exposure can make a big difference to which trees will establish successfully.
How wet or dry is the ground?
Some species are happy with wetter conditions, while others prefer free draining ground.
What are you trying to achieve?
A new hedge, woodland, shelterbelt, agroforestry system or landscape planting will all have different requirements.
What pressure will the trees face?
Deer, rabbits, livestock and other pressures need to be considered before planting and protection may be needed.
And then there’s the question of provenance, plant size and quantity.
It can feel like a lot to consider, but that’s where we can help.
At The Grower, we grow and supply a wide range of UK grown trees and hedging, and we’re always happy to talk through your planting plans and help you choose the right plants for the job.
Because the best tree for your project isn’t necessarily the biggest one or the fastest growing one.
It’s the one that’s right for the site.
If you’re planning a planting project this winter, get in touch or browse our bare-root range online.
Grow well. Plant well.

Twenty Trees. Hundreds of Years of Impact.

For £200, you'll help establish 20 trees that will benefit people, wildlife and the environment for generations.

Your support helps us:

🦌 Install deer fencing to protect young trees
🌱 Increase tree production at the nursery
🐝 Support pollinators and biodiversity
🚜 Supply trees to farmers and landowners
🌍 Build more resilient landscapes

These trees will be planted on our farm where visitors can enjoy them from our public footpaths and see first-hand the positive impact their support has made.

Together we're creating something that will outlast us all.

A rare evening out of the muddy boots and into something a little more glamorous.

With Papa the babysitter holding the fort, we headed to the Eden Project for the Addington Fund’s 25th Anniversary Celebration Dinner.

Honoured to be part of an evening celebrating the incredible work supporting farming families and rural communities across England and Wales.

Here’s to the next 25 years.

Plant 10 Trees. Multiply Your Impact.

A donation of £120 helps establish 10 trees on our farm in Cornwall.

Those 10 trees will:

✅ Create homes for wildlife
✅ Support biodiversity
✅ Help store carbon
✅ Improve landscape resilience
✅ Become part of future woodland and hedgerow networks

You'll be helping us grow more trees while supporting local production and reducing our reliance on imported stock.

And because they're planted on our farm, you can visit via our public footpaths and watch them grow season after season.

Ten trees. Decades of benefits.

Bare root season series - nearly here

As the days get shorter and the leaves begin to turn, we’re getting ready for one of the busiest times of year at The Grower.
Bare-root season.
But what exactly is a bare root tree?
Unlike a tree bought in a pot, bare-root trees are lifted from the field during their dormant period, with the soil removed from around their roots. They’re supplied without leaves and are ready to be planted while dormant.
Bare-root trees are a practical and cost-effective option for planting projects of all sizes from new hedgerows and woodland creation to forestry, agroforestry, farms, estates and landscaping projects.
Why choose bare root?
• Cost-effective, particularly for larger planting schemes
• Easy to transport and handle
• Planted while dormant, giving roots time to establish before spring
• A wide choice of native and UK-grown species
• A great way to get large numbers of trees into the ground
Here at The Grower, our bare-root trees start life in the fields here in Cornwall. We carefully manage them through the growing season before lifting, grading and preparing them for customers across the UK.
Good-quality plants, planted in the right place and looked after properly, give your trees the best possible start.
Planning to plant this winter?
Now is a good time to start thinking about what you’ll need.
Our bare-root season runs through the winter, and pre-orders are now open.
Grow well. Plant well.
