The summer break is the perfect time to keep maths skills ticking over before the big jump to secondary school. Here are some easy, everyday ways to make maths part of your child’s holiday fun:

✨ Cook & Bake Together – Let your child weigh, measure, and adjust recipes. Great for practising fractions, ratios, and conversions.
🛒 Shopping Maths – Get them to total the shopping, work out discounts, or compare prices. Perfect for mental maths and percentages.
📍 Outdoor Maths Hunt – Create a scavenger hunt where clues involve shapes, measuring distances, or reading coordinates.
🎮 Maths Games & Apps – Choose fun puzzle apps or board games that stretch problem-solving and quick recall.

This week in English, we’ve been exploring mystery stories with a Minecraft twist 🧱🕵️‍♂️—the perfect way to spark imagination and keep learners engaged! We've focused on sentence building, using setting clues, suspenseful openers, and powerful vocabulary to bring their writing to life.

Meanwhile, in Maths, we’re tackling ratio, fractions, and mental fluency—staying sharp and confident!

This week, I used a 4 in a Row game to help a student solidify their understanding of simplifying ratios—and it was a hit! 🙌

✨ How it worked:
To colour in a square, students had to correctly simplify the ratio. Only accurate answers earned a move!

🎯 Why it worked:

Repetition without feeling repetitive

Immediate feedback & discussion

Built fluency and confidence

Encouraged strategic thinking AND maths mastery

💬 The student was fully engaged, competitive (in the best way), and really started to own the skill by the end of the session.

📚 Common Math Mistake Alert!

A misconception that pops up from time to time with my students is that 1/25=25%

Why?
Because the number 25 is in the fraction, so it feels like it should match 25%.
But here’s the truth:

➡️ 1/4 = 25% ✅
➡️ 1/25 = 4% ✅

How do we know?
👉 Multiply top & bottom of 1/25 by 4:
1/25 = 4/100 = 4%

💡 It's a classic mix-up: the number in the denominator (25) tricks the brain into thinking it relates directly to 25% — but percent means “out of 100”, not just “has a 25 in it.”

So next time you see 1/25, remember:
It’s small — just 4%, not 25%! 🔢
