Being busy and being productive are not the same thing.

The students who make the most progress focus on methods that actually improve learning.

Students often ask me:

"How many hours should I revise?"

The honest answer?

It's the wrong question.

A student can spend three hours re-reading notes and make very little progress.
Another student can spend 30 minutes completing retrieval practice and gain far more.

The quality of revision matters much more than the quantity.
Focus on effectiveness first.

The hours become far more valuable afterwards.

Every year I see students working incredibly hard without getting the results they deserve.

Usually, it's not because they're lazy.

It's because they're spending time on revision methods that feel productive but don't actually improve performance.

Common mistakes include:
📌 Reading notes repeatedly
📌 Highlighting large sections of text
📌 Spending all their time on favourite topics
📌 Avoiding exam questions
📌 Measuring revision by hours instead of outcomes

Effective revision is often less comfortable than ineffective revision.
Testing yourself feels harder than reading notes.
That's because learning is happening.
The goal isn't to feel busy.
The goal is to improve.

One thing I wish more parents understood:

If a student is avoiding revision, it doesn't automatically mean they don't care.

Sometimes they're overwhelmed.
Sometimes they're anxious.
Sometimes they genuinely don't know where to start.

Many students would rather avoid revision altogether than risk discovering they don't understand something.

Support often begins with helping students feel capable again.

Confidence and progress are closely linked.

One of the biggest misunderstandings around revision is assuming students aren't working because they don't care.

Sometimes that's true.

More often, it isn't.

What looks like procrastination can actually be overwhelm.
What looks like laziness can be uncertainty about where to start.
What looks like lack of effort can be fear of getting it wrong.
Most students want to do well.
The challenge is often helping them develop the confidence, structure and strategies needed to succeed.
A student who feels capable is far more likely to engage than a student who feels defeated before they begin.
Sometimes the most helpful question isn't:
"Why haven't you started?"
It's:
"What's making it difficult to start?"

The students achieving strong grades aren’t usually perfect.
They’re usually consistent.
And that’s good news because consistency is something anyone can develop.

Students sometimes tell me:
"I wish I was naturally good at Psychology."
My response is usually the same.
Psychology isn't a subject where success comes from natural talent alone.
Understanding develops.
Essay writing improves.
Evaluation becomes stronger.
Exam technique gets better.
These are skills.
And skills can be learned.
Progress is often far more achievable than students realise.

One of the most damaging beliefs students carry is:
"I'm not naturally academic."
Or:
"I'm not as clever as everyone else."
The reality is that exam success is rarely determined by intelligence alone.
Students who improve their grades often focus on things they can control:
✔ Showing up consistently
✔ Acting on feedback
✔ Completing practice questions
✔ Learning from mistakes
✔ Asking for help when needed
The students who succeed aren't always the students who find everything easy.
They're often the students who keep going when things become difficult.

A Level Results Day is almost here — and one grade does not tell the whole story.

Having taught, tutored and marked A Level Psychology papers this year, I know just how much work sits behind every result.

So, to everyone waiting for Thursday: good luck. Take a breath, open the results and give yourself a moment before deciding what they mean.

Celebrate the result you wanted. If it isn’t what you hoped for, don’t panic — there are always options, and one set of grades does not determine what happens next.

Fingers crossed for all students awaiting results tomorrow 🤞
