11 plus Easter and Summer booster groups

Now teaching for a test I’m not a fan of but the 11 plus is different. I’ve had many parents say that their child shouldn’t need extra support to get into grammar school however they are often surprised to learn that the 11+ isn’t just a harder version of Year 5 schoolwork. It actually tests skills that are not part of the National Curriculum.

If your child is aiming for a Grammar school place, here is what they actually need to master:
1. The “Invisible” Subjects
In school, children focus on English and Maths. In the 11+, they face Verbal Reasoning (logic with words) and Non-Verbal Reasoning (logic with shapes). Without specific practice, these is IQ style questions can be confusing and overwhelming.

⏱️ 2. The 30-Second Rule
In a standard classroom, children are encouraged to take their time and show their working. In the 11+, they often have as little as 30 seconds per question. Children need to feel how quick that is and learn elimination techniques needed to beat the clock.

📖 3. The Vocabulary Gap
The 11+ often requires a top tier vocabulary words like melancholy, industrious, or ambiguous. Many questions rely on identifying synonyms and antonyms. Without a deep word bank, these marks are easily lost. When a child isn’t intimated by these ‘big words’ anxiety drops and processing speed increases.

Most people think dyslexia is just about flipping Bs and Ds. But as a specialist, I see the “invisible” side every day.
It’s the child who can tell you a brilliant story but can’t get one word on paper. It’s the “brain fog” after 20 minutes of reading. It’s the incredible “big picture” thinking that others miss.

New Year, New Term, New Beginnings!
The school alarms are back on, and the energy is high! I want to wish a massive good luck to all the students, parents, and teachers heading back to the classroom this week. 🎒📚
I am beyond excited to get started because there is so much happening! I am fully embracing a season of growth and “newness”:

I DID IT! 🎉
Eighteen long months of very late nights, early mornings, and constant juggling, but holding this certificate in my hands makes it all worth it. I am officially qualified with a Level 5 Certificate in Dyslexia; Literacy, Support and Intervention!
To say this was ‘not for the faint-hearted’ is an understatement. Balancing being a mum, teaching in the classroom, and running my tutoring lessons pushed me to my absolute limits. But this qualification is a key part of my master plan to provide the best possible support for children who learn differently. Which includes my very own daughter.

This is a huge step in my future plan, and I’m overwhelmed with pride and excitement for the children I’ll be able to support with these new skills.
For now, it’s time for a well-deserved break from studying……But watch this space... Level 7 is next on the list! 😉and big plans and dreams to come. I’m excited for the future.

September always feels like a fresh page. A new term, a new season, a chance to reset, refocus, and embrace new challenges, new goals, and new directions. It’s a little strange not stepping back into a classroom this year, but with that change comes excitement for what’s ahead and gratitude for the journey so far.

Education is such a powerful force. It shapes not only knowledge, but confidence, resilience, and future dreams. To all the children heading back to school, and to all the teachers, and staff who make learning possible every day: wishing you courage, curiosity, and joy in the months ahead.

Big things are waiting. Change is growth. And this term is the start of something exciting for all of us. 🍂✨📚

When Theo (aka Chuck) first came to me in Year 5, the goal was simple: his mum just wanted him to be “working at” in maths just once! That was the hope.

Fast forward three years and not only did he achieve that, he started to work at a greater depth level then he went on to absolutely SMASH his SATs and is now working exceeding expectations in secondary school and identified as a top-set mathematician. It was always in him; we just had to find the right way, the right rhythm, and the style that worked for him. It was a partnership And once we did… well, Chuck took off!

Watching that transformation has been one of those teaching moments you don’t forget. The kind that reminds me why I do this. The determination, the humour, the “quiet confidence” and the pride in his own progress… that’s the good stuff.

Now he’s ready to fly the TutoringbytheC nest, and I’ll miss him big time. As the wise Nanny McPhee once said:

“When you need me but do not want me, then I must stay. When you want me but no longer need me, then I have to go.”

And that’s where we are.

Fly high, Theo. Keep pushing. Keep looking for patterns. And remember nothing is impossible. You’ve earned every bit of it. 😄✌️

Chipping away in the background……

I’m so quiet on here because I’m so busy all of time.

Taking these little wins because even though I still feel there’s a mountain to climb I’m slowly chipping away. This is not for the faint hearted and has been so much harder than I imagined…… but as the saying goes what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

Teaching is hard and there are days you feel utterly defeated. It’s a job where you are constantly spinning plates and where you take on many different roles to the needs of many different children.

Tutoring always reminds me why I became a teacher. I simply love it. Creating this little business was the best and bravest thing I have done.

Last lesson of 2024 done. Can’t believe another year is over. Every year feels busier and crazier than the last.

I love when it’s time to pause and reflect and to look back on how far you’ve come.

Wishing all my wonderful learners and their wonderful family a very Merry Christmas. I look forward to what 2025 has to bring.

Teaching certainly feels more pressured than ever before and it feels like education staff literally limp to the finish line. BUT we made it. 💪

Now it’s time to be with my 3 girls and give them the most important thing, ‘time’. Thank you to all those that support me and a special thank you to the amazing tutoringbythec children because you remind me why I still love teaching.

Time to switch off. Merry Christmas to you all.
