There’s no communication hierarchy 🤍

We are not aiming to move on or away from one support to another.

We are here to embrace all forms of communication, and provide a choice and range of aids to support non-speaking children and young people.

Different communication aids may require different skills, but that doesn’t make one better than the other.

Think of it like watching a film at the cinema vs seeing the same story performed live on stage. Different experiences, but neither is more valid.

Speaking and non-speaking communication are both equally valid and deserve to be equally respected.

And when a non-speaking child communicates with you in their preferred way? That “wow” moment can be incredible.

We need to stop thinking of communication as something a child has to perform correctly.

Before words come language. Before language comes connection, shared experiences and understanding.

When we follow a child’s interests, respond to their attempts and give meaning to what they’re communicating, we create the foundations for language to grow. 🤍

And that’s just as important for non-speaking children as it is for speaking children.

We should always respect the child’s preferred method of communication.

We change our method of communication depending on who we are talking to, what time of day it is, and how we are feeling. Our AAC users should be able to do the same.

If you could only communicate in one way such as phone calls, how would that make you feel?

If your non-speaking child has no other means to communicate, they may find their own way to get something they want or need and gain your attention.

The AACademy is an education platform that demonstrates way to teach those skills. From throwing cups and climbing counters to communicating and using a wider range of communication supports.

Communication can’t be something that your non-speaking child is only exposed to for 20–30 minutes once or twice a week. It needs to be woven into everyday life, during meals, play, dressing, outings, routines, and all the little moments in between.

Communication is about so much more than asking for snacks or toys. It’s about commenting, protesting, asking questions, sharing feelings, making jokes, connecting with others, and having a voice.

Speech isn't the goal. Functional communication is.

Every child deserves a way to express their needs, share their feelings, make choices, say "no," and advocate for themselves, whether that's through speech, AAC, gestures, facial expressions, or another form of communication.

Communication is so much bigger than talking.
