A University of Southampton-led study has found that people in Hampshire’s most deprived areas are less likely to survive a cardiac arrest.

Researchers analysed ambulance data from more than 4,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) and found a significant link between neighbourhood deprivation and lower survival rates.

🔎 Key findings:
✔️ Only 10% of OHCA patients survived for at least 30 days.
✔️ Deprivation was linked to worse survival rates, even after adjusting for factors like age and ambulance response times.
✔️ Survivors were, on average, younger than those who died.

The study highlights the urgent need for further research and targeted interventions to improve survival rates in deprived communities.

🚨 Did you know that respiratory diseases are the third leading cause of death in the UK? That one in six NHS beds is occupied by respiratory patients? That the most deprived communities are seven times more likely to die from lung conditions?

To tackle this, the University of Southampton is joining forces with leading universities, clinicians, policymakers, and industry experts to launch CARRii (Centre for Applied Respiratory Research, Innovation and Impact).

Launched yesterday at the House of Commons, CARRii aims to:
✅ Reduce hospital admissions for asthma, COPD, and respiratory infections by 20%
✅ Ease NHS winter pressures
✅ Address health inequalities in respiratory care
