🎯 11+ ENTRANCE EXAMS: 10 TIPS EVERY PARENT & STUDENT SHOULD KNOW
Preparing for the 11+ can feel overwhelming.
There are books to work through, practice papers to complete, new vocabulary to learn and, sometimes, a child who is starting to feel the pressure.
But successful 11+ preparation isn't about simply doing more work.
It's about doing the RIGHT work.
Here are 10 tips to help your child prepare effectively πŸ‘‡
1. DON'T JUST PRACTISE β€” PREPARE
Before your child starts tackling difficult questions, make sure they understand the skills and strategies behind them.
πŸ“š Learn the method
🧠 Understand the strategy
✏️ Then practise it
Understanding comes before repetition.

Don’t Rush the Question! 🧠

One of the biggest 11+ mistakes?

Starting the calculation before fully understanding the question.
Teach your child:

STOP β†’ READ β†’ UNDERLINE β†’ THINK β†’ SOLVE

Ask:
πŸ‘‰ What information do I have?
πŸ‘‰ What am I being asked to find?
πŸ‘‰ Which information actually matters?

Good problem solvers don't just calculate quickly.

They think carefully first.

The 10-Minute Reading Habit πŸ“š

Want to help your child prepare for the 11+ without adding hours of revision?

Try this:
⏰ 10 minutes of reading every day.
After reading, ask:
β€’ What happened?
β€’ Why did it happen?
β€’ How did the character feel?
β€’ Which words stood out?
β€’ Can you summarise it in one sentence?

Small daily habits can build powerful reading skills.
11+ Tip: Don’t just ask, β€œDid you enjoy it?” Ask questions that make your child THINK about the text.

WHY WOULDN'T YOU INVEST IN YOUR CHILD'S FUTURE?

ALL parents would benefit from having a tutor for their child. Yet it seems to be one of the most difficult decisions faced by many parents.

I know from being in education over 25 years and through talking to many parents over the years.

Having a tutor is not just about improving a subject or preparing for an exam. A tutor can personalise a student's learning - pace and difficulty-and give them more attention than a teacher in school.

Having a tutor can help to bridge gaps, with self-esteem, resilience, confidence and independence. All skills your child will need as they go through their lives- into Secondary school, College, University or the workplace.

Tutoring should not be thought of as by the hour...rather it should be seen as the journey and transformation of the child. The skills gained through tutoring will go on to help your child throughout their life and "who doesn't want to give their child(ren) the best start in life?"
