BACK FOR A THIRD TIME!

The one and only Michael Klein 🌷

Joe and I cannot wait to host our incredible friend, Michael Klein next year. This workshop will be a little different! Studio time & Outdoors… seems pretty perfect to me!

What is the difference between Naturalism and Realism?

Naturalism is often confused with Realism, another movement that began in France during the mid-19th century. Both portrayed life as it was, but there are subtle differences between the two painting styles.

Realist artists sought to represent real life in a truthful way by depicting common people going about their ordinary lives. Naturalist artists weren’t so much concerned with the content of the painting but rather, they were more interested in how they painted it, with as much observational accuracy as possible. Where Realism often carries political or social commentary, Naturalism turns its attention outward: to light, to weather, to the particular color of a hillside at four in the afternoon, to the way a bloom holds up under subtle light and how that same discipline of seeing translates once you venture outdoors.

This workshop is built around that movement. We spend our first three days indoors, working the way the Naturalists worked in the studio-slow, controlled, exacting - before carrying that same eye out into the Yorkshire Dales, where the subject changes but the method doesn’t.

Led by Michael Klein, a contemporary artist working in the naturalist tradition, this workshop draws on that same discipline of seeing — applied first to the studio, then to the landscape.

🏆 WE WON! 🏆

I’m so grateful we won the Skipton Bid Arts & Culture Award! What a wonderful evening meeting local businesses and championing all the great businesses our community has to offer. Thank you to everyone there last night, it was scary to be there on my own, (especially with crazy hormones of a two week old!) but your love and kindness made it so special. Thank goodness daddy is now home & we can share this trophy with our little family. ❤️

Even though most businesses in Skipton don’t know us; we know you! Our students love staying in your hotels, eating in your restaurants, drinking in your pubs, shopping in your shops & being in our beautiful and buzzing town. It’s our pleasure to welcome so many folks from around the world who all leave with a love for Skipton. 🌍

This award wouldn’t have been possibly without all the nominations of our loyal and loving students. You are our art family. The bond and love we share is unbreakable. As we head into our tenth year, I will repeat what my friends RICHARD SCHMID Artist & Author and Nancy Guzik say, “Art has the power to do good!”.

Let’s keep striving for excellence. Keep pushing for fine art teaching to be of exceptional standards. Keep pushing for our community to grow and the friendships to flourish. Just one word: grateful. ☺️

Thank you again Skipton BID this means so much to us. 🥰

DOUBLE TROUBLE 🚨

Stephen Bauman, artist & teacher will be back for 2027, this time with the incredible Steve Forster ❤️‍🔥 We cannot wait! Neither can our students apparently! Only 3 spaces left on this workshop!!💨

6 days of drawing and painting under the expert guidance of these two power houses?! We are just giving the people what they want!! 😝

Composition in Portrait Drawing & Painting | All levels welcome

Many students, even those with strong observational skills, struggle to use what they see to its greatest potential- shaping their drawings into something more purposeful. This course is designed to address that by helping students think about a portrait not just as an object to be recorded, but as a design element within an image—something that can be emphasized and hi arranged to create a stronger artistic statement.

The teaching will be a combination of:

• Lecture-Based Content – Introducing key principles of dynamic structure, design and compositional thinking.

• Demonstration-Based Instruction – Both instructors will draw every project alongside students, showing how to simplify and organize the portrait into compelling, well-structured shapes.

• Daily Individual Critiques – One-on-one critiques ensure that students receive direct feedback tailored to their specific needs.

💰 Payment plans available as always
