Last night, Come From Away opened at BIRD Conservatoire. 🎭

Winner of the 2026 Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year Competition!!

Please join us in congratulating Year 3 Musical Theatre student Charlotte English, who yesterday took First Prize at the final held at the Sondheim Theatre.

Chosen from a field of more than 330 applicants and judged by some of the most respected names in British theatre, Charlotte's performance earned the competition's highest honour.

The Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year Competition has long been recognised as one of the industry's most significant showcases for emerging musical theatre talent, and we are thrilled to see Charlotte's work celebrated in this way.

Charlotte, we could not be prouder.

We are delighted to share that Year 3 Musical Theatre student Taziva-Faye Katsande was named Runner-Up at the 2026 Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year Competition.

Selected from more than 330 applicants nationwide, Taziva-Faye progressed through multiple rounds before performing in yesterday's final at the Sondheim Theatre in London's West End.

The competition has a remarkable history of identifying exceptional emerging talent, with previous finalists and winners including Courtney Bowman, Alex Young, Erin Doherty and Taron Egerton.

We could not be prouder of Taziva-Faye's artistry, dedication and extraordinary performance.

Congratulations, Taziva-Faye. What an achievement.

What a day for BIRD...!

Yesterday, at the 2026 Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year Competition, our students were awarded both First Place and Runner-Up in one of the most prestigious student musical theatre competitions in the UK.

🏆 Charlotte English – Winner
🥈 Taziva-Faye Katsande – Runner-Up

With more than 330 applicants from drama schools and conservatoires across the country, to have two finalists is extraordinary. To leave with both top awards is something truly special.

Our sincere thanks to The Sondheim Society, host Bella Lupia Brown, musical director Nigel Lilley and the judging panel: chair Edward Seckerson, Melanie La Barrie, Andy Nyman, Jenna Russell, Rachel Tucker and Matt Wolf.

Most of all, congratulations to Charlotte and Taziva-Faye. Your talent, hard work and commitment to your craft have been recognised on one of the industry's most respected stages.

We are incredibly proud.
