News from the School Council
Our most recent pupil voice project has been gathering opinions about the zebra crossing on Abbey Road. It is such a busy main road that many children have to cross to get to Shepley First School. We all discussed the crossing with our classes and Miss Kitchen and Miss Burrell discussed the topic with their classes too.
We shared our results with Mrs Marsh and Mrs Ward, our co-opted governor at Shepley First School, who is responsible for Pupil Voice and School Council. The results are quite shocking, take a look at these numbers:
• 102/168 use the zebra crossing on Abbey Road at least a few times a week to get to school.
• 105/168 have said that they have been waiting to cross and a car has NOT stopped for them at the zebra crossing.
Here are some comments when asked about how the children feel when waiting to cross at the zebra crossing:
‘Nervous and a little bit worried. The cars go super-fast,’ Reception
‘Worried about being hurt by a car,’ Year 1
‘Bit worried that the cars are going too fast and might not stop in time,’ Year 2
‘Scared, worried, anxious, angry, annoyed, nervous, frustrated because cars don’t always stop,’ Year 3
‘Annoyed because some cars speed across the crossing when people are waiting to cross,’ Year 4
‘Terrified because I don’t want to get hit by a car so I sometimes run across the road,’ Year 5
These are just a few comments but the majority of the children here at Shepley are very worried about this road and would like it to be safer.
Councillor John Taylor has launched a petition calling on Kirklees Council to review several zebra crossings across the Kirkburton ward that are close to busy junctions, including the one on Abbey Road. He will be formally presenting this petition calling on improvements on the 10th March.
We are asking for YOUR help. Please can you take the time to follow the link and sign this petition in the hope it could make crossing Abbey Road safer for the children of Shepley First School.
Thank You
