There is often a gap between what is being taught in school and what is being learned.

In a busy classroom a child may not speak up when they don't understand and that is how gaps in knowledge and understanding arise. The moment passes and the lesson moves on.

In our small group sessions children feel confident to speak up and we meet them at their point of need. We identify misconceptions as soon as they arise and address them immediately. This empowers progress.

We offer small group tuition from Key Stage 1 through to GCSE taught by experienced, qualified teachers.

This! 👇🏽

We are Conexus 💜🎓💜🎓

Over the past year, we have done a huge amount of work across Alternative Provision and EOTAS, supporting young people aged from 5 to 19 in our centres, in the home, in school and online.

The point has never been to make the young person fit the provision. It has been to shape the provision around what that young person needs in order to engage, learn and make progress.

That has meant a very broad curriculum. Alongside Functional Skills and GCSE English, Maths and Science, our young people have worked through AQA Unit Award Schemes covering everything from arts and crafts, sewing and modelling clay to weather, football, creative writing, money and budgeting. We have also used photography, film and media where these have provided a meaningful route into learning.

Some of this might not look like the traditional version of education, but that is part of the point.

For some young people, progress starts with feeling safe enough to engage. For others, it starts with finding an interest, rebuilding trust in adults or experiencing success after a long period without it. Once that connection is there, we can build from it.

But none of this happens in isolation.

The relationships around the young person matter enormously. We work closely with parents and carers, school teams, particularly SENCOs, and Local Authority colleagues. So much rises and falls on communication and trust, not just between us and the young person, but between all of the adults around them.

Alternative Provision and EOTAS are not about lowering expectations. They are about recognising that there may need to be a different route to achieving them.

For us, that is what Empowering Progress means. Progress might be academic, but it might also be re-engagement, confidence, emotional wellbeing, trust or simply reaching a point where learning feels possible again.
