✨On Saturday we had our first pop-up cinema event and I believe something truly special took place; a seed was planted.
A HUGE thank you to everyone that came out and supported us. This event from its conception to its delivery taught me and many others what community truly means ♥️
So much love and gratitude for The Independent Caribbean Kollective team, the team, , and who all worked together to transform the space, to make it gorgeous, homely and warm. Without them all the day wouldn’t have been possible at all♥️👏🏿
✨A huge thank you to and Sheffield PA Hire for providing equipment and for making our pop up come possible.
✨Thank you to the team members that helped us to make this happen and to the ward councillors, and the Windrush Day Grant for funding the project.
✨Big, big love to and for capturing the evening so beautifully. I can’t wait for y’all to see footage from the evening ♥️
✨SO much love to our guests , Retesha Laing and Beverley Bennett for sharing their stories, their histories, the work and their love with us and to the incredible .sibanda for hosting the Q&A ♥️👏🏿✨
To everyone that came throughout the day, that kicked it with us, that broke bread, laughed, listened and communed together - with my whole heart, THANK YOU♥️
Creating spaces for our stories to be heard, our presence to be seen and felt and to give and receive love is important. Community and togetherness is important and necessary to our survival as people. It doesn’t have to be grand and fantastic, even where two or three are gathered - powerful things can bloom: ideas, empowerment and change can bloom.
I can’t wait to see where this journey will take us God has never missed once.. so watch this space 🙏🏿❤️✨ Love, and more love ♾️

✨🍿Just 3 Days to go until The Commune Pop-Up Cinema✨🍿
🌟Our first pop up is themed on joy and community and we think it’s a great way to sign off the year! 🎄🧑🏿🎄
🌟We’ve got a great programme featuring family friendly (Tom and Jerry), Jamaican classic (The Harder They Come), and Sheffield’s very own (Passing the Baton: The Legacy of the Windrush Pioneers).
🌟We understand personally the effects of the cost of living crisis in the lives of people across the country. Food, warmth and joy shouldn’t have to come at such a high cost and we certainly shouldn’t have to choose between these necessities.
🌟For this reason we have number of tickets available for people in the community who like to come along but can’t afford it.
✨If you’d like to come along or would like to gift a family, friend or loved one a ticket, drop us a message or email on [email protected] - we got you 💕✨

Having the support to be able to run events like this and making cinema accessible for our Caribbean community is incredibly important and needed. Our stories matter, shifting the narrative matters, gathering and celebrating ourselves, our history and our culture matters.

✨Slide one is from Stella Dadzie’s - A Kick in the Belly: Women, Slavery and Resistance.✨
I just finished up an essay exploring the impact of enslaved resistance on abolition in the British empire. And do you know what.. this essay half killed me, liberated me and traumatised me all in one go. As difficult as I found it, its mind-blowing to me that this was just 4-5 generations ago. Crazy thing is, I don’t know their names but I feel their spirit inside of me, so deeply.
I just wanted to tell you how vital it is to learn about where you come from. As Black women, girls, boys and men.. every time you grapple with not feeling good enough, strong enough, powerful enough to go on.. Please remember: 1. It is okay to rest - that is a necessary form of liberation, and 2. Our African and creole ancestors fought till death for their freedom.. death couldn’t scare them. So whatever comes at you, you got this. That fearlessness is in your DNA.. and that stuff is potent. Why do you think that no matter how many times, in whatever form this white supremacist patriarchy comes at your very being it’s never been able to win? I’ll leave you with the words of prophet J. Hus “They waan tek weh my freedom - but they can’t tek weh my spirit”. Keep on keeping on babes ❤️.

✨FINALLY - delighted after literally 6 WEEKS of technical issues to share the full documentary film 'Passing The Baton: The Legacy of the Windrush Pioneers' with you beautiful humans!!
The marathon continues with our children - they are our future and our elders are the foundation in which we stand. The film is an ode to the Windrush Generation in Sheffield and those that followed in their footsteps and will continue to walk in the path they have carved out. It's not perfect - but I hope that you hear the biggest message of all.. which is LOVE and UNITY. Big love from the whole Nyara Team.. I hope it blesses you # # # # # ✨
Sheffield City Council Thank you again for allowing us the opportunity to make this film 💛

✨It’s been a few days since the screening of Passing The Baton and we’re still on a high!
After a few days of rest and a moment to take everything in, we’d like to say thank you again to everyone that came out to the screening and those that have been supporting in spirit – especially those who couldn’t make it. A massive thank you again to The Black Arts Collective, The Independent Caribbean Kollective, Sheffield City Council, the elders and community members that took part and everyone that came together to make it possible.
We hope that the film opened up a wider conversation around how we can build bridges between the Windrush Generation, those that came before us, and the younger generations and how we can address the lack of cultural, artistic, and heritage provisions that exist within the Caribbean community, and the larger Black community.
We are working on how we can extend this project and build on what has been started and we will definitely keep you up to date! The film will be available to view on YouTube and our website from Wednesday 24th November for those that missed it and for those that would like to watch it again.
In the meantime – check out the official artwork by the INCREDIBLE 😍How gorgeous is this!✨
And last thing folks – remember that you can achieve what you believe. If your mind can conceive it, you can achieve it!
Big love and blessings,
The Nyara Team x
