Why Sexual Health is important

Sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise, in Yorkshire and Humber more than 37,000 cases of STI’s were diagnosed in 2017. Out of all public health centres Yorkshire and Humber score the third highest rate of new STI’s in England.

Rises were seen in majority of the 5 major STI’s in 2016; the biggest increase was in syphilis by 84%, there was an increase in chlamydia and gonorrhoea by 1%, ge***al herpes in 2% and ge***al warts decreased by 9%.

A s*xually transmitted infection can be caught from just one unprotected s*xual encounter, through vaginal, oral and a**l s*x, therefore it is important to ensure that you are using protection, especially with new s*xual partners. It is recommended that you get checked once a year and after any new s*xual partner. Local authorities are highlighting the importance to make STI screenings easily available for people.
