With the up and coming excavation at Hollowcowhey and the possibility of discovering a henge, we should probably ask ourselves 'What is a henge?'

Well, to find out more, why not watch my friend Giselle at The Archaeologist's Notebook explain all in the video below, and follow her fantastic page for regular, super informative archaeology videos 🤠

But before I go, with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Farming in Protected Landscapes funded excavation due to take place between the 24th September and 8th October, we still have availability for volunteers to join us.

I do love experimental archaeology as a way to explore, understand and replicate now lost techniques. In this instance it's all about iron smelting, something close to my charcoal production heart 😍

As schools across the country get back in action today, I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the KS2 focused school sessions I can offer covering the Stone Age and Roman Periods.

As a community archaeologist I am passionate in sharing Britain's rich heritage with the public, making sure my walks presentations and workshops are suited to the target audience.

Within a school setting my talks are engaging offering ample opportunity for questions throughout, are made relevant to the area, and include the use of props and artefacts (both display and handling collections).

If this is something your school or group would be interested, or you would like to find out more, I would love to hear from you. I am South Yorkshire based, but more than happy to travel further afield.

You can message me on Facebook, or send me an email at [email protected]

The benefits of hot weather for prolonged periods is the production of parch marks, such as here at Sheffield Manor Lodge. Reduced levels of moisture in the soil above buried walls and floors means the grass dries out faster than elsewhere, revealing the plan of the building. In contrast, buried ditches and pits retain more moisture in the soil, so in dry conditions the grass remains greener for longer.

Archaeological woodland surveys have been a common occurrence for me over the last 10 years, as landowners such as councils, water companies and charitable organisations such as The Woodland Trust, The Wildlife Trusts and National Trust have all sought to manage existing woodland and establish new woodland in response to climate change. This regularly includes the need to diversify woodlands so as to improve habitats and conserve ancient woodland.

Earlier this year I was commissioned by Bradford Council to undertake an archaeological survey of Esholt Woods ahead of a programme of management works. Not only did the survey reveal evidence of late medieval field enclosure and 20th century plantation woodland expansion. It also revealed extensive areas of quarrying, evidence for charcoal production, a textile mill and a network of tracks and boundaries associated to Esholt Estate.

The survey was also important for the purpose of raising management recommendations for each heritage feature inline with the Forestry Commission's UK Forestry Standard and the National Planning Policy Framework.

I'm happy to say the report is now housed with West Yorkshire Historic Environment Record and available at: https://doi.org/10.5284/1145503
