Last week we brought Harmony Works to the Sheffield Youth Cabinet, an elected group of 35 young people aged 11-17 who are the representatives making decisions for the communities they represent.

We talked about the benefits of being involved with music - self confidence, better attention span, communication skills, mental health, educational improvement, emotional intelligence, and most of all fun!

We've discussed with them our plans for Canada House and our ambitions for our Youth Forum and Youth Board - we place young people's voices, thoughts and ideas at the heart of all we do.

They were really inquisitive, asked useful and thoughtful questions and shared the music they love and participate in.

We are sure that these young leaders will spread the word and enthusiasm for our project with their communities and encourage other young people to join us to find out more about how they can shape the space where they can make their music, their way.

🎓 Meet Joy, the peripatetic brass teacher leading the next generation of brass players 🎓

The inaugural year of the Future Leaders’ Programme coincided with Joy launching Brass Sparklers, the renowned beginner level band at Lewes, Glynde and Beddingham Brass Band. While she already had extensive experience teaching whole-class brass, she recognised that leading an out-of-school group needed a different approach.

Applying for and taking part in the Future Leaders’ Programme allowed Joy to develop particular skills in pacing, structuring a session, teaching notation to a large group and managing the energy levels of a lively group of young people.

Through implementation of consistent session routines and the support network that the Future Leaders’ Programme provides, Joy has benefited from a renewed confidence in her leadership. “When I feel confident,” she reflected, “children feel safe.”

We’re delighted to say that Joy will be joining our mentor team as a Supporting Practitioner at one of the hands-on Workshop Weekends 👏

Sheffield Music Hub Breaking Down Barriers to Live Music for Every Child 🎶

New research from Playground Proms shows around 2 million children across the UK are missing out on live music due to cost and travel.

Not in Sheffield! At Sheffield Music Hub, we believe every child deserves access to high-quality music education, regardless of their background or circumstances.
This year alone, we’ve supported along with our partners over 18,000 pupils to experience live music right in their schools, communities and across the city. For many, it’s their very first time hearing live music up close and that moment can be truly transformational.

But we don’t stop there. We help young people take the next step by:
• learning an instrument
• joining bands and choirs
• exploring music production at Red Tape
• performing in real venues across Sheffield
• accessing targeted support where it’s needed most

It’s not just about watching music, it’s about being part of it.

Ian was interviewed by ITV to talk about the importance of children and young people seeing live music. You can catch Ian's FULL INTERVIEW below:

We’re proud of what we’re building in Sheffield but there’s more to do.

🎓 Meet Rory, an ambitious musician making an impact in Sheffield 🎓

Rory joined Future Leaders through his work with Sheffield Youth Big Band, wanting to feel more confident at the front of the room and bring stronger planning into rehearsals. 🎶

Since taking part, that change has been easy to spot. His sessions have been described as “faster-paced, more confident”, with Rory now “firing on all cylinders at the front.”

Could Future Leaders help you take the next step in your own professional development? Find out more and apply for this year’s programme via the link in the comments.
