Just a reminder to get your young people to sign up for this Thursday's Youth Forum session.

Open for 11-21 year olds - What makes you feel welcome and that you belong? What would be important in an outside space? How do you feel going somewhere new for the first time?

Come along to meet our team of young designers who will be working from some of your ideas.

Snacks provided and public transport costs covered.

Meeting room and further details to be sent out on Wednesday to registered participants.

Coming up next week, our Youth Forum meets with students from The University of Sheffield School of Architecture and Landscape's Live Project to discuss about what they want from Harmony Works when it opens.

We’ll be talking rooftop sensory garden, welcoming entrances and receptions, green spaces and portable snack bars. What makes a space feel like you belong there?

If you’re 11-21, you can sign up to come along via the link in the comments, and you don’t have to have been along before!

The students will be presenting their designs and work to us in November so you’ll see what your ideas have become really soon!

We are delighted that Music In The Round and Ensemble have been shortlisted for a Sky Arts Award in the Classical Music category!

The Sheffield Chamber Music Festival has been such an important part of the city's musical life throughout its existnce, and it's fantastic to see it recognised on such a scale!

What a couple of weeks! The Sheffield Music City report was launched at Haggler’s Corner, detailing Sheffield music’s indelible historical, cultural and economic impact on our city, while setting out a blueprint to secure its future. Great to see so many in attendance from across the many musical worlds of Sheffield.

Last week, Sofar Sounds held one of their mystery concerts, a beautiful, ethereal experience with Ewan Sim a Manchester-based singer-songwriter blending soul, indie, pop and rock, William Jack best known for incorporating his jazz guitar background into an unconventional style of cello playing, with a passion for breaking boundaries between genres and cultures and Sonority Choir Sheffield performing unplugged in the same space. It was full of people who’ve never been in our building before and was described as one of their "best yet" shows.

We’ve also welcomed Sheffield City Council's CultureClub; Sheffield and South Yorkshire creatives came through our doors to find out what we are planning for the rejuvenation of this historic building. Neil McSweeney, author of the Music City Report, spoke about his findings and its potential for the growth of music in Sheffield and The Bare Project brought their Common Threads weaving project for people to get stuck in to. It was lovely to see so many people get involved and learn about Somali weaving techniques, chatting to strangers as they worked.

Exciting news! We are hosting our first-ever KS5 Music Open Evening with providers from across the city.

Tuesday 20th October
6:30pm - 7:30pm
All Saints Catholic High School, Granville Road, Sheffield, S2 2RJ

Sheffield Music Hub is committed to supporting young musicians as they transition from GCSE and BTEC Music in years 10 and 11 to A Level or further BTEC Music in Years 12 and 13. It can be difficult to know what opportunities are available to continue studying music after GCSE, so we want to help young people explore the different sixth forms and colleges across Sheffield that offer music courses.

This is our first KS5 Music Open Evening, and we hope it will become a regular fixture in the Sheffield Music Hub calendar.

GCSE and BTEC Music numbers in Sheffield have been rising over the past two years, and we are proud to be a city that is bucking the national trend. Something exciting is happening, and we want to help young musicians continue that momentum as they move into post-16 education.

We had such a fantastic time last week for Heritage Open Days and Castlegate Festival.

We welcomed 382 visitors through our doors with the help of 12 fantastic volunteers. They came for

• 14 tours,

• 3 drop-in Memory Cafes,

• 1 architect’s talk with Evans Vettori Architects about our future plans

• 1 rehearsal from Sheffield Music Hub’s Senior Orchestra and Hallam Sinfonia,

• 2 Concerteenies babies’ concerts,

• uncounted numbers of biscuits and cups of tea!

A baby, only 3 weeks old, coming to their first ever concert.

A little girl and her family popping in because the door was open and finding our hall is a brilliant place to spin in.

A father and son hearing the music played by 42 young musicians drifting across the tram bridge calling them to find out what’s going on.

An 86 year old on a tour telling us that when she was 5, King George gave her a chocolate bar and a peppermint stick when he came to Sheffield after the war. She’ d never seen chocolate before and she kept it pristine for years.

People told us their memories of working with Joe Cocker, watching F***y Cradock present cookery demonstrations, eating all they could at the buffet, hanging out on the dancefloor waiting for their crush and even that they visited before they were born when
their mum was pregnant with them in 1967!

Thank you to everyone who gave their time to make it possible and who came by to see what we have in store for this magnificent building.

Brilliant to welcome Councillor Fran Belbin and Councillor Ben Miskell to Canada House earlier in the week, to share our plans for the future and visit some of the grand and many curious spaces which will become a home for young musicians across the city and region. It was wonderful to receive their support and hear their enthusiasm.

Thanks to Ian Naylor Sheffield Music Hub Nick Thorne Orchestras for All and Harmony Works Trustees David Hobson and Ian Falconer for helping to facilitate the visit.
