❌ ⚠️WARNING ⚠️❌ Home Education should never be pushed or forced onto people, especially by schools. Unfortunately, I have dealt with numerous situations where the school is pushing parents to deregister their child and home educate. This is an illegal practice, and it is something I am passionate about stopping.

If your child is at school, attendance is of course important. The issue lies in schools only looking at attendance through data and statistics, not on an individual basis. The decision to home educate is a big one, and should be taken without any pressure or influence from outside sources. Unfortunately, in my role as Lead EHE Officer, I had to continually hold schools to account when they tried to offroll a child and would present home education as the only option available to avoid prosecution. 😡

❌ FALSE ❌ The vast majority of parents who have a child with an EHCP absolutely have the right to deregister and Home Educate without needing permission. Even children who are placed within a Special School can become Home Educated, but this can be a bit of a battle.

In my former role as Lead EHE Officer at a Local Authority, I would get calls on a daily basis from parents, whose child with an EHCP, just wasn't being given a good level of education in a mainstream school.

Even worse were the calls I'd get from panicked Headteachers who wanted me to "talk some sense" into the parents. Parents who only wanted what was right for their child. And Headteachers who were terrified of losing the additional income an EHCP can bring in.

❌FALSE❌ The Local Authority can certainly ask, but you are under NO obligation to show work examples. As a Former Lead EHE Officer, I dealt with this exact scenario, especially when I had new EHE Officers join my team who did not yet know the ins and outs of Homeschooling.

⚠️ WARNING ⚠️ Schools should never pressure parents into home schooling in any circumstances. This is Off rolling and is a serious matter. When I was the Lead EHE Officer in a Local Authority, it was my job to hold schools to account when they tried this. Unfortunately, it happens more often than you would think.
