This is my progress from the past 4 months. Started at 115kg body weight and ended at 100kg losing a total of 15kg/33 pounds.

Despite looking way better in the after picture I haven't actually gained any muscle during this process, in fact i've probably lost around 2kg if the body fat measurements are accurate. Plus I’ve definitely lost strength. All I've done here is revealed what was already there by losing all the fat covering it up, which is definitely the fastest way to change how you look. Gaining muscle takes months.

The goal now will be to beat all my old PR’s by the end of the year whilst maintaining this body composition. I'll be doing a very slow bulk over the next 6 months to hopefully gain a minimal amount of fat whilst putting on muscle.

Exercise of the week: Overhead tricep extension!

This is a great exercise for the long head of the triceps.

Just set the cable to the lowest position and use the rope attachment.
Grab the rope with an overhand grip and spin around so you’re facing away from it.
Lean forward slightly so your head’s not in the way and then extend your arms until they’re fully locked out.
Lower to the bottom and repeat for however many reps you’re doing.

Exercise of the week! Face away cable curl.

This is a great bicep exercise. Just set the cables to the lowest position, grab one handle in each hand and step forward enough so that the cable is pulling your arm behind you to get a stretch on the bicep.

Top tip: keep the upper arm and elbow still during the movement to ensure the bicep is doing all the work!

Another amazing transformation from my client David!

David came to me with the goal of losing 1 stone in 3 months which he has smashed by simply sticking to a calorie deficit and starting strength training sessions at the gym. To make this even more impressive he had a knee injury which we had to work around in the gym!

David was the perfect client, sticking to his diet, working hard in the gym the whole time and losing a pound a week consistently over the 3 months.

Which workout split are you doing? And is it right for you?

For optimal gains you want to be training a muscle every time it is recovered. How often that is will depend on your level of experience in the gym.

Beginners can train a muscle several times per week and recover fine whereas an advanced bodybuilder may only be able to train the same muscle once or twice.

Exercise of the week: Cable row

Another great exercise for the upper back and lats.

Make sure you sit far enough back to get a nice stretch in the lats when your arms are straight.
Grip the handle and whilst keeping your back straight pull it into your lower stomach. Keep the elbows tucked in.
Control the weight on the way down and get a nice stretch in the lats at the bottom.

Top tip: use two of the individual handles to get more range of motion as the metal V shaped handle will hit your stomach preventing you from pulling all the way back.
