INCREASING ACCESS TO EARNING WHILST LEARNING FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

This project, aims to explore opportunities for young people to combine part time jobs with attending school full time.

Background

A recent study by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills “The Death of the Saturday Job”, found that young people who combine work with full time education, gain valuable life skills, are more likely to secure full time jobs, or, as high education students are more likely to get higher grades and secure graduate jobs.

Increasing earning whilst learning is not only beneficial for employers and young people; it will also benefit the wider economy.

Despite these benefits there has been a decline in young people combining work with study. In 1997, 42% of 16-17 year olds were also working. This figure reduced drastically in 2014 to 18%. The study suggests that nationally 55% of young people aren’t working because they want to focus on their studies. In Hull the number of child work permits issued reduced from 69 in 2013 to 20 in 2016.

Young people in Hull may also face additional pressures, which prevent them from seeking and securing part time work. This project aims to further explore these findings and determine whether there are opportunities for young people and local businesses.

Next Steps

Child Dynamix and Hull City Council will conduct a survey of local businesses, to consider their views, to raise awareness and to determine whether there are opportunities for young people to secure work.

The survey also aims to identify any issues, or obstacles employers might face, recruiting or employing young people.

If opportunities for young people are identified, the views of local school children and service providers will be sought to see whether local children are keen to take up employment and if support is required to enable them to do this.

Funding will be sought to pilot the project in two local schools, both situated in areas of high deprivation and the findings will determine whether the project should be rolled out across the city.

This project supports the aims of the City Plan, benefiting many young people, not just financially but through work experience and confidence building.

Local businesses will benefit along with local communities and this will influence the local economy.

This is the final live version of the survey https://www.snapsurveys.com/wh/s.asp?k=151033020879 .
The closing date will be 18th December.

Vote in the Stoves Community Kitchen campaign! 01/10/2015

Hi all, please vote for a charity to win kitchen equipment. I voted for Sheffield Hospitals Charity for their parent accommodation at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. As a mum of a child born premature and critically ill, we were rushed from Scunthorpe to Jessop's in Sheffield. I stayed in the parent accommodation for almost three weeks. To be honest I don't remember the kitchen as there was too much other stress going on in my life at that time. Parents from our community get sent there all the time so please vote as it could be a member of your family that benefits x Sian (Director at Be The Boss (UK) Ltd)
