A little nature adventure, whatever the weather! With the days getting shorter and the weather turning chillier, there's nothing quite like curling up with a good book.

And just because we're spending a little more time indoors doesn't mean the adventures have to stop! The Wild Britain: Habitat Tales collection takes little readers on gentle adventures through some of Britain's wonderful natural habitats.

Autumn is well and truly here! The mornings are getting chillier, the evenings are drawing in, and the trees are slowly turning beautiful shades of gold, orange and red. But while we're reaching for our cosy jumpers and warm drinks, the natural world is busy preparing for the colder months ahead.

🐿️ Squirrels are gathering and hiding food for winter.

🦔 Hedgehogs are building up their fat reserves and searching for safe places to hibernate.

🍄 Fungi are appearing across woodland floors, helping to break down fallen leaves and dead wood.

🍁 And beneath all those fallen leaves, countless tiny creatures are finding shelter from the cold.

Autumn is such a wonderful time to get outside and notice the little changes happening all around us. Even a short woodland walk can reveal something new!

As Red Squirrel Awareness Week comes to an end, we're celebrating one of the Isle of Wight's most treasured little woodland residents!

The curious case of the invisible buzzard!

For the past few weeks, I've been hearing the unmistakable call of a buzzard near our house. Nothing unusual there, as we're lucky enough to have plenty of buzzards here on the Isle of Wight.

But there was one little mystery... I could never actually spot it!

Today, I heard that familiar call again and started looking around. That's when I noticed a starling perched on the roof of the house opposite.

And guess what? It was the starling making the noise! 😂

It turns out that starlings are incredible mimics and can copy the calls of other birds, including buzzards, curlews and blackbirds. Some can even imitate car alarms, phones and other everyday sounds!

I had absolutely no idea, and I find it fascinating that this tiny little bird has had me searching the skies for a buzzard for weeks!

Just goes to show, nature always has something new to teach us. 🌿

With it being Red Squirrel Awareness Week, it seems like the perfect time to revisit the little character who started Wild Britain: Habitat Tales.

When I began creating the series, I wanted each story to introduce children to a different British habitat and some of the wonderful wildlife that calls it home.

And for our first woodland adventure, there could really only be one star… Jasper the red squirrel. 🐿️

Living on the Isle of Wight, we’re incredibly lucky to still see red squirrels in our woodlands and even our gardens. The Island is one of their remaining strongholds in southern England, which makes them feel especially close to home.

Jasper and the Spring Surprise was the very first book in the series, following Jasper through the woodland as spring begins to arrive — meeting other British wildlife along the way and encouraging little readers to notice the changing natural world around them.

Eight books and eight British habitats were planned from that one little squirrel.

So Jasper will always be a rather special character here at Skye Moore Studio. ❤️

It’s Red Squirrel Awareness Week! 🌳 🐿️

Living on the Isle of Wight, we’re incredibly lucky to share our woodlands with one of Britain’s most iconic native animals — the red squirrel.

And there’s some lovely news to celebrate this week!

A recent survey found evidence of red squirrels in 93% of the Isle of Wight woodlands surveyed, with our Island population estimated at around 3,500–4,000 squirrels.

The Solent helps protect our reds from grey squirrels, but looking after their woodland habitats and the green corridors connecting them is still incredibly important.

Red squirrels have a particularly special place here at Skye Moore Studio too. Jasper was the very first character in my Wild Britain: Habitat Tales series, introducing little readers to the wildlife and wonder of our British woodlands.

So this Red Squirrel Awareness Week, keep your eyes on the treetops when you’re out and about. You never know who might be watching you back!
