HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

I am finishing for a well earned break until 1st September. THANK YOU for all your hard work this year!

If anyone is desperate for a lesson over the holidays, I will be teaching on 3 dates in August, so do message if you want to book a lesson.

Otherwise, have a fantastic summer, and I look forward to seeing you in September, with a newly filled pencil case!

REQUIRED PRACTICALS

If some of you want to do some revision over the Summer, but are not too sure what to do, a good place to start is the required practicals, worth 15% of exam marks and often essay type questions, so we can have our answers prepared!

There are 21 for double award and 30 for separate sciences (double shown below, triple online).

I suggest watching one of the required practical short videos on YouTube, then going slowly through it by making notes or a revision card. Each one should take about 15 minutes, so revision can be as short or as long as you want it!

Good videos to watch include:
* freesciencelessons
* cognito
* Malmesbury school

KEEP GOING...

I know it's hot and the heat makes everyone really slow ๐ŸŒ.

It's particularly tough for the year 10s, many of which are going through mocks at the moment.

Here are some top tips for keeping going and STILL getting work done...

๐Ÿ’ง Keep drinking water (or squash etc) - if you don't stay hydrated, you could get a headache ๐Ÿคฏ.
๐Ÿ’ง Leave homework to later in the day, when it has cooled down a bit or, if you are a morning person, do a bit in the morning, before it gets too hot ๐ŸŒ„
๐Ÿ’ง Fit in 30 minutes here and 30 minutes there - it's hard to concentrate fir long when it's so hot ๐Ÿ”ฅ
๐Ÿ’งWear light clothes and make the most of your shower ๐Ÿšฟ - both these things help to keep you fresh and less sleepy.

WATER ๐Ÿ’ง

Everyone is feeling the heat currently, so it's important to keep HYDRATED ๐Ÿซ—.

Here are a few facts about water relevant to GCSE chemistry:

๐Ÿ’ง Water on Earth is recycled by the water cycle.
๐Ÿ’ง Water is a SOLVENT (dissolves solids we call SOLUTES).
๐Ÿ’ง Water exists as a solid (s), liquid (l) and gas (g) and is also part of aqueous (aq) - which means dissolved in water.
๐Ÿ’ง The small molecules produced in condensation reactions is water.
๐Ÿ’ง Water is needed for photosynthesis (REACTANT) and is a PRODUCT of respiration.

LIKE FATHER LIKE SON...

Niels Bohr, the physicist who came up with the atomic or planetary model (GCSE Physics and Chemistry - double whammy topic!) won a prize for his work.

53 years later in 1975, his son Aage Bohr ALSO won a prize for his work on the structure of the atomic nucleus.

It's great to follow in your parents footsteps, ๐Ÿ‘ฃ, but equally it's good to be inspired by science and go ahead and leave your own trail ๐Ÿ‘ฃ.

HUMANS OUTPERFORM A1 IN COMPLEX MATHS TEST

Recent research in Nature magazine has found that maths graduates are still outperforming A1 at complex maths problems.

The future looks bright for maths graduates! ๐ŸŽ“ ๐Ÿ”ฎ

BIOENERGETICS BIOLOGY

This is a module that includes photosynthesis and respiration.

Sometimes, it is hard to make links with why plants do photosynthesis.

They are the producers of food and other materials that allow bith plants and animals to survive.

A useful acronym to help us remember how plants use glucose is F.A.C.E.S.

Uses include:

๐ŸŒŸ make Fats
๐ŸŒŸ make Amino Acids
๐ŸŒŸ make Cellulose
๐ŸŒŸ make Energy (respiration)
๐ŸŒŸ Store Starch

WELL DONE!

Well done to all the year 11 students, plus their supporting families for getting through the GCSE'S.

It is a difficult time, with revision being a chore and exams being stressful.

Now is the time to relax and have time out. You may want to get a job, go on holiday, or just hang out with friends.

Whatever you do, have fun and try not to think about the results in August - they will be here soon enough and most people have good plans for September.

Enjoy your Summer ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿฅณ

LAST 5 MINUTES PHYSICS REVISION

If you've got 5 minutes before the physics exam, cheer yourself up listening to the electromagnetic spectrum song ๐ŸŽต

You'll be singing it all exam! ๐Ÿ˜†

PHYSICS PAPER 2

The last science paper ๐Ÿฅณ.

A few tough topics here, but the below list is helpful for some last minute revision:

๐ŸŒŸ Know some contact and non contact forces, plus definitions of a scalar and vector
๐ŸŒŸ Watch the acceleration required practical video
๐ŸŒŸ learn the difference between transverse and longitudinal waves and be able to give an example of each
