NOVEMBER MOCKS

One or two of my students are already talking about their November mocks.

It's possibly a little early to revise for science at the moment as you will probably be tested on paper 2 content, which you will currently be studying- just make sure all your homework is up to date and you go through any topics that you are unsure about.

Maths can always be revised - the best way is to do past papers and mark them yourself. Any questions that you struggle with, and are not sure what they are about, speak to your teacher, they will be able to point you in the right direction. 👈👉👆👇

ATOMS

Now is the time to make check you know all your facts about the history and parts of the atom ⚛️.

Common questions include: definition of isotopes, and working out the relative atomic mass of isotopes plus describing how structure of atoms developed from 1800 to present day.

This is a double whammy topic as it is tested in chemistry and physics.

MUTATIONS

A mutation is a change in the DNA base sequence. Sometimes, mutations can have no effect, sometimes they have a positive effect. However, most people associate mutations with causing cancer and harm.

The BRCA 1&2 genes are a good example of this as, if you inherit this gene, it can cause breast or ovarian cancer in women. They also have a 50% chance of passing this gene on to their children.

Nowadays, scientists can test fir theses genes and individuals can make choices based on their results eg more frequent screening or surgery.

There's a new film out this week called Pressure, which is about a meteorologist (weather man), who predicted a storm that could have destroyed the D Day landings and prevented it.

MATHS RETAKES

I know one or two students won't quite have managed to get the elusive grade 4 in maths this Summer.

Don't be down about it, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and gear up for a retake.

If you were close to getting a 4, you should be doing a retake in November. School or college should provide lessons to support you.

I am finishing for a well earned break until 1st September. THANK YOU for all your hard work this year!

If anyone is desperate for a lesson over the holidays, I will be teaching on 3 dates in August, so do message if you want to book a lesson.

REQUIRED PRACTICALS

If some of you want to do some revision over the Summer, but are not too sure what to do, a good place to start is the required practicals, worth 15% of exam marks and often essay type questions, so we can have our answers prepared!

There are 21 for double award and 30 for separate sciences (double shown below, triple online).

I suggest watching one of the required practical short videos on YouTube, then going slowly through it by making notes or a revision card. Each one should take about 15 minutes, so revision can be as short or as long as you want it!

KEEP GOING...

I know it's hot and the heat makes everyone really slow 🐌.

It's particularly tough for the year 10s, many of which are going through mocks at the moment.

Here are some top tips for keeping going and STILL getting work done...

💧 Keep drinking water (or squash etc) - if you don't stay hydrated, you could get a headache 🤯.
💧 Leave homework to later in the day, when it has cooled down a bit or, if you are a morning person, do a bit in the morning, before it gets too hot 🌄
💧 Fit in 30 minutes here and 30 minutes there - it's hard to concentrate fir long when it's so hot 🔥
💧Wear light clothes and make the most of your shower 🚿 - both these things help to keep you fresh and less sleepy.

Everyone is feeling the heat currently, so it's important to keep HYDRATED 🫗.

Here are a few facts about water relevant to GCSE chemistry:

💧 Water on Earth is recycled by the water cycle.
💧 Water is a SOLVENT (dissolves solids we call SOLUTES).
💧 Water exists as a solid (s), liquid (l) and gas (g) and is also part of aqueous (aq) - which means dissolved in water.
💧 The small molecules produced in condensation reactions is water.
💧 Water is needed for photosynthesis (REACTANT) and is a PRODUCT of respiration.
