I was really sad to hear about Dolly Parton this week. I’ve always known and loved so many of her songs but I watched a documentary about her a year or so ago and remember just thinking what an amazing person she was.

I wanted to tell Woody a bit about her and why I thought she was so special, but I didn’t think the documentary I’d watched was particularly appropriate for an eight-year-old. So I found The Library That Dolly Built, which is all about her Imagination Library, and we rented it on Amazon and watched it together last night.

I knew a little bit about the Imagination Library already, but I hadn’t really appreciated the scale of it or quite how incredible it is.

Such a simple idea – every child receiving their own high-quality book through the post every month, from birth until they start school – but the impact of that is just huge. Getting books into homes, encouraging parents to read with their children, developing language and a love of stories from such a young age. And then seeing the sheer scale of the operation and how many children have benefited from it was just amazing.

Woody enjoyed it, although quite a few of the facts and figures definitely went over his head! So I’ve also ordered him the Little People, BIG DREAMS book about Dolly, which I think might help bring her story to life for him a little more.

I came away from it thinking what an incredible way to use the position you find yourself in. She had this idea and then kept going with it, and it has ended up putting more than 300 million books into children’s homes.

As someone who loves children’s books and knows how important reading together at home can be, I think that’s an extraordinary legacy to leave behind. ❤️

One of the things I’m most excited about for this year is growing my Year 4 and Year 5 11+ lending library.

With Trafford’s move to the new FSCE entrance test, there is an even greater emphasis on developing children who read widely and deeply. In fact, the official guidance encourages children to “develop strong reading habits by reading widely and deeply.” (Reading School)

So I’ve been busy carefully building a library that goes far beyond typical 11+ practice books.

📚 Modern fiction
📚 Timeless classics
📚 High-quality picture books
📚 Fascinating non-fiction
📚 A range of genres, challenge levels and authors

I want to help children discover books they really enjoy while expanding their vocabulary, imagination, creativity and understanding of the world around them.

I can’t wait to see these shelves being borrowed from, talked about and recommended between the children over the coming year.

If your child is going into Year 4 and you’re looking for thoughtful, engaging preparation for the FSCE 11+, I currently have a small number of places available in my Monday 4pm and Thursday 4pm groups.

Feel free to get in touch if you’d like to find out more.

Last week was a fun way to finish the term. 🍬

To kick off each session, the children each had £1 to spend in the CT Tuition Sweet Shop. Lots of great maths, problem-solving and discussion before the sweets even came out!

This is the second year of the CT Tuition Sweet Shop, and I think it’s officially become one of our end-of-year traditions. 😊

Thank you to all of my wonderful families for another fantastic year of learning, laughter and hard work. I hope you all have a brilliant summer! ☀️

Varjak Paw by S.F. Said has been a firm favourite of mine ever since I taught it at Cheetham Community Academy many years ago, and now Woody has discovered it too. He absolutely devoured it in just a few days!

Varjak is no ordinary cat. He must learn the Way – a secret martial art for cats – as he faces dangerous dogs, rival cat gangs and the mysterious Vanishings. It’s fast-paced, exciting and full of adventure, with plenty of twists to keep children hooked.

If you’re looking for a brilliant read for a child in Years 4 or 5 over the summer, I can’t recommend this one highly enough.

A lovely way to end the school year.

I'd already heard that three of my Year 6 children had achieved the SATs results they'd been working so hard towards, and today I found out that the fourth had too!

Every single one achieved the expected standard with some also achieving Greater Depth in individual subjects.

SATs are only one part of a child's journey, but hard work, resilience and perseverance are qualities worth celebrating. These four children earned every bit of their success, and I'm incredibly proud to have been a small part of their journey.

A huge congratulations to all four of you – enjoy a well-earned summer! 🎉

If your child is moving into Year 6 in September and would benefit from a little extra support throughout their SATs year, I have one space available in my Tuesday 5pm Year 6 group.

Feel free to get in touch for more information. 😊

Thank you so much to this lovely family for taking the time to leave such kind words. Knowing that children genuinely enjoy coming to sessions, grow in confidence and make real progress is exactly why I love what I do.

If you're looking ahead to September, I now have limited spaces remaining in my Thursday 4pm Year 4 11+ group for children starting Year 4 this autumn. All of my other Year 4 groups are now full. If you'd like to find out more, please send me a message; I'd love to hear from you!

What a fantastic half term it’s been following the World Cup in our tuition sessions! ⚽

One of the highlights has been the excitement at the start of each session as everyone checked how their sweepstake team had got on. The countdown to the final, the friendly competition and the anticipation of who would get first pick of the football prizes has been such good fun!

A huge congratulations to all of our prize winners, and especially to our top prize winner, who was absolutely delighted to take home his brand new full-size World Cup football today! 🏆⚽

Thank you to everyone who took part and embraced the fun. It’s been another lovely way to bring our CT Tuition community together.

Recently, parents have been sharing some lovely updates with me. ❤️

One told me today that her son has reached Greater Depth in reading – something that came as a wonderful surprise.

On Friday evening, I received the loveliest WhatsApp from a family who were out celebrating their daughter's SATs results. They were absolutely over the moon, and it made my day reading their message.

I've also had parents asking to add younger brothers and sisters to my waiting list, and so many have told me recently that their children love coming to sessions each week.

Moments like these mean such a lot. Watching children grow in confidence, seeing their hard work pay off and hearing how they're getting on after they leave my tuition room is exactly why I love what I do.

Thank you to all the wonderful families who trust me with their children. It's a pleasure ❤️.

One of the topics we've been working on in my Year 4 11+ groups recently is time.

It's one of those areas that seems straightforward until you start unpicking it! There's so much to know: telling the time, reading analogue and digital clocks, converting between 12- and 24-hour time, calculating time durations, interpreting timetables... and then there are all the little facts that children are expected to know too.

One of those is remembering how many days there are in each month.

Many of us learned the rhyme:
"Thirty days hath September, April, June and November..."

But have you seen the knuckle trick?

Hold your hands in front of you in fists and start on the first knuckle of your left hand. That's January. The dip between the first and second knuckles is February. Keep moving across your knuckles and dips, month by month. Every month that lands on a knuckle has 31 days. The dips are the shorter months (apart from February, of course!). When you reach July on your last left-hand knuckle, simply carry on with August on the first knuckle of your right hand.

It's such a simple little trick, but the children loved it and it's a great one to keep practising at home.

I have a few spaces available in my 11+ groups for children starting Year 4 in September. If you think your child would enjoy learning in this way, feel free to get in touch.

A day away from the tuition room today, investing in becoming an even better tutor for the children and families I work with. 💜

A huge thank you Tutors who Thrive for such an inspiring day. It was lovely to catch up with familiar faces, meet lots of new people, and be part of such a positive, supportive community.

I came away with loads of ideas that I’m excited to bring into my sessions over the coming months, all with one goal: helping the children I work with grow in confidence, enjoy learning and achieve their potential.

The atmosphere was fantastic from start to finish! Thank you! 😊

Now, time to turn all those ideas into action!
