Together We Are Stronger

On Friday 4 September, colleagues from across Wave came together at Caradon and St Austell Conference Centre for our twice-yearly Subject INSETs.

Led by our fantastic team of Subject Advisory Leads, Wave's subject networks meet regularly throughout the year, working together online every half term and face-to-face twice a year to develop pedagogy, share best practice and strengthen subject expertise.

This latest round of INSETs saw over 100 colleagues gather for dedicated training in Reading, PE, English, Science, Food, Maths and PSHE. Staff travelled from across Devon and Cornwall, often making significant journeys to be part of the day. These are journeys that make a difference.

At Wave, we invest in professional collaboration because we know the impact it has for both colleagues and pupils. These opportunities enable staff to stay up to date with the latest developments, deepen their subject knowledge, explore practical teaching approaches, strengthen functional skills delivery and learn from one another's expertise.

Most importantly, they remind us of the power of working together. By sharing ideas, experiences and a collective commitment to improving outcomes for children and young people, we continue to grow stronger as a Trust.

Together, we are stronger. Together, we make a difference.

We are delighted to share some exciting news with you. Wave Shoreline Academy have welcomed two Tenrecs as our new school pets!

Tenrecs are small, gentle mammals native to Madagascar. They are naturally shy and mostly active during the evening, making them fascinating animals for pupils to learn about. They will live in
a specially designed enclosure where they can be cared for safely and comfortably.

Having school pets provides many valuable opportunities for our pupils. Research shows that caring for animals can have a positive impact on children's wellbeing, confidence and emotional development.
As an alternative provision academy, we know that positive relationships and nurturing experiences play an important role in helping our pupils feel safe, calm and ready to learn.

The Tenrecs will help pupils to:

🟢 Develop responsibility and empathy through caring for living creatures.

🟢 Build confidence and self-esteem by taking part in supervised care routines.

🟢 Support emotional regulation by spending quiet, calm time observing or interacting with the animals.

🟢 Learn about animal welfare, habitats and conservation through our curriculum.

🟢 Develop communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

The Tenrecs are being well looked after over the summer holidays and can’t wait to be back at the academy in September to see the pupils and staff in the new academic year.
