Golowhe: Cornish for ‘to glow’, ‘light up’, ‘to shine’. Bespoke counselling & ecotherapy in Cornwall. Welcome to Golowhe Therapy. Thank you.

Golowhe is a Cornish word meaning ‘to glow’, ‘to light up’, ‘to illuminate’, ‘to shine’… I believe we all have the ability to shine, and sometimes we need support to find the light again in the darkness. As a qualified counsellor trained in the person-centred approach and with over decade of experience working with and in the outdoors in a variety of woodland & educational settings, I can offer se

Introductions to the 4 feel-good hormones… 👇

💛 Endorphins (the pain reliever) - move your body and really smile! 😊

💛 Serotonin (the mood stabiliser) - slow down, soak it in, express some gratitude 🧘

💛 Oxytocin (the love hormone) - connect and receive connection from others 🫶

💛 Dopamine (reward hormone) - celebrate the small wins and take some time for you with self-care 🫧

Making time to celebrate and share successes doesn’t come easily… however during the last heatwave a cheeky iced latte felt like a good excuse! The taught components and assignments are all completed for my Level 6 certificate in Therapeutic Counselling Supervision with Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) 🙌 and with a few more things to finish off before this month is through, the feelings of one door closing is already being met with optimism for what others opening might bring… 🚪 ✨

So here’s to practicing to make progress… gratitude to fellow therapists and supervisors… making time for clarity in offerings… and patience in website updates (yet to go live!)… 🙏 Let’s see what this Autumn will bring 🌙 ✨

Being inspired by the morning cobwebs glistening in the hedgerows… 🕸️ Spiders might not be everyone’s favourite creature, yet their webs are something to be admired. Weaved from the inside outwardly, they can be used as a metaphor for own lives - a reminder that we are the masters of our own worlds… 🕸️ what care and attention we choose to put into creating our webs can be shown in how this then supports or enhances our lives ✨

Needing further inspiration? Here’s some suggestions to wonder upon…

🕸️ what threads (such as relationships, interests or skills) strengthen your life?
🕸️ what ‘old habits’ or patterns are ready to be blown away?
🕸️ can you find the balance between the productivity in your web of life, and being patiently still to accept where you are?
🕸️ what would you like to weave more of into your world?

Like the spider’s web, our lives can also be intricate, delicate and beautiful…
There can be times when our threads and patience will be tested… times when we might need to mend or rebuild… and times when we have to let go… 🕷️ 🕸️
May you cast your web into world with care and the things you might be needing or seeking will be attracted to you… 🌙 ✨

Reminder to slow down… especially when you start your day… 💤

Why?

Because when we rush (particularly as soon as you wake) we are entering into ‘panic mode’. This means our minds and bodies are flung into a state of high alert 🚨 suddenly the stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline are flooding in, which can upset our daily rhythms and if continues over a longer period can cause illness and disease… 🌡️

Waking slowly is important because it allows yourself to adjust… your body restarts more slowly, including your hormone cycles and levels, which better supports your mood, digestion and energy 🧘 🫧

So when you wake up. Take a moment to check in with yourself. The world can wait (as can your phone). Breathe. Notice something new. Stretch. Smile… ✨

Sounds too good to be true? The weekends or a day off can be an ideal time to start a new morning slower routine… 👀
⏰ Maybe set your alarm that little bit earlier and set some self-care time aside?
☎️ Can you move your phone or devices from their usual charging/nighttime spot to reduce temptation of constant tech use?
📻 Choose what you see or hear or read before you enter into the world - do you feel deflated or distracted by the news? What can you tune into instead?
🪟 Can you let the natural light in? The subtle changes in daylight can be another helpful way for your body to differentiate time of day and gentle signal to start your day.
🫧 How fully do you breathe? By taking some deeper breaths (fully inhale and exhale) can help to set your day - and if you can open a window or step outside for the fresh air, even better.

Let’s advocate for slowing down our starts to the day to help us feel calm and in control for whatever our days might bring… 🌙 ✨

Yes! Share the good things (however small) and give compliments away freely… 👇✨ Giving to others also makes us feel good (so it’s also a win win). You never know how it might make someone’s day, week or moment… and it’s no overstatement to say that it could save a life. There’s few guarantees in this life and we need the light when our days can feel dark 🙏 🌙 ✨

And that’s my first academic year as a school counsellor done…. ✨ It was an unexpected addition this year and am so grateful for the connections, invitation and encouragement to take this weekly role on, which I have absolutely loved! 🥰 Thank you to everyone for being so welcoming and supportive. It’s a refreshing change to see a secondary school’s attitude towards wellbeing, mental health and nurturing the individual 🙏

Our young people carry more than we truly know - as well as the weights and expectations of an uncertain world upon their shoulders… so being a small part of their life journeys and being in a position to share or lighten this load is a privilege 🌙 ✨

Everyone has their own way of seeing and being in the world, it’s a bit like wearing a filter or glasses… 👓 this is our perspective… and for each of us it will be unique depending on our life experiences and influences ✨

Our perspectives might sometimes align with or challenge others, feel fixed or malleable, be beneficial or detrimental… and of course there are many variables to consider and navigate ✨

Talking therapies can offer a non-judgemental space for these perspectives to be aired, shared, explored, unpicked, understood, enquired, and experimented with if desired… it can give help to clear or colour the filter so a different view can be used, or sometimes perhaps for old glasses to be removed and new ones to be worn… 👓 ✨

A four step process to better understand our perspectives (and to possibly shift them) is to:

👓 Notice - become more aware of the moment and the filter being worn. Notice too where in the body this might be held or felt most?
👓 Accept - give yourself some compassion for the perspective you currently have and wonder (without judgement) why this might be the way it currently is for you?
👓 Enquire - apply the question of ‘what if?’ and sit with the possibility of an alternative viewpoint. What does this look and feel like to you?
👓 Shift - based on your perspective, insights and understanding, is there any reason or room for a shift or change to occur? If yes, how might this appear?

Perspectives will always be different to each of us, yet understanding (either by taking some time yourself, or sharing sessions together) can allow an opening up to explore views further and enable to see worlds - be it your own or other’s - more clearly… 🌎 👓 and hopefully this will open our eyes, minds and hearts a little bit more too… 🌙 ✨
