Well hello to all you new, temporary, home schoolers, home educators, world schooling mums, dad’s, and guardians! How are ya?? How on earth are you all getting on being thrown into temporary home schooling whilst the schools are shut? I’ve seen just about everything so far. Families starting strong with all subjects covered and continued through the weeks, I’ve seen families start strong and have dwindled off for Easter and I’ve seen families just being families and enjoying some time together.
So, what is the right way to do it I hear you ask?
Well my lovelies, to that question, there is no correct answer.
What you are experiencing is not ‘home education’ so please don’t think what you are experiencing is the same as full time home educators. You are simply temporarily responsible for making sure your little ones are safe at home. I understand some schools are throwing all sorts of work packs and homework at you all, but this isn’t the time to be stressed out about it, nor is it a time to have your children even more unsettled than they probably already are. Remember, there are many ways of learning. As a permanent home educator, you come to understand that there is really no set rule for all.
My son learns in a completely different approach to my daughter. My son learns hands on, in the middle of it all, feeling and touching the knowledge and sinking his every thought into what he’s doing, fully immersive learning. My daughter however, will sit and read books all day long, studying and enjoying test after test after test. Your child is unique, and believe me, that is a GOOD thing.
I can assure you all of this though. Your child is not going to ‘be behind’ because they have missed three or four months of school. They are not going to be ‘disadvantaged’ because they haven’t been able to sit in a classroom with their friends socialising for a while. Your child’s life isn’t going to be thrown into oblivion because essentially the summer holidays have been brought forward and extended for a few extra weeks. And more importantly, you’re not a bad parent because you decided to let them sleep in past 9am and then watch CBeebies for the rest of the day.
Calm down and enjoy this time together. Learning is all around you. Even if that is PE with Joe Wicks, making mud pies in the garden, baking fairy cakes in the kitchen, or playing Minecraft for a few hours.

This is the boy that was told he was 'below average'. This is the boy who was told to 'keep still'. This boy was the one who was told he took up too much of 'teachers' time'. This is the boy who was told he wasn't 'the same as the other children in the class'. This is the boy who was told at 6 years old that 'you can't play to learn, Year 1 is where the hard work starts'. This is the boy who tried so very hard to be part of the very regime that was torturing him. This is the boy who they said 'failed'.
Children are told who they are, what they are, what they will be, what they won't be and judged for most of their child lives. Sit down, be quiet, keep still, learn this, learn that, stop that, fingers on lips, legs crossed, stop talking.

But, once he was allowed to stand up, be loud, keep moving, learned what he wanted to learn, removed the finger from his lips, uncrossed his legs and talked and talked and talked, this boy became who he was always supposed to be. Most importantly, it was who he wanted to be.
Not your ideal of a child, not our ideal, not theirs, just his.
His home edventure was his now; learning, playing, growing and living. If you have the chance to let your child thrive in a world different to the usual protocol of school, then do it. Let your child live their own learning journey. Just let them be them. There is no 'ideal'. Just learn to love, and love to learn.
