šŸ’« Responsive vs. Reactive 🧨

šŸ’”Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the difference between a horse that’s responsive and one that’s reactive. It might sound subtle, but it’s huge, and it shows up in the smallest moments.

A responsive horse is with you. They hear you, they wait, they try. It’s a conversation.

A reactive horse isn’t really there - they’re just surviving the moment. Quick to move, quick to brace, often trying to escape the pressure rather than understand it.

šŸ‘‰ And honestly? I’ve seen both in my horses and in myself.

Sometimes I ask with too much energy, not listening to my horse, or not enough clarity, and I get a reaction. Other times, I slow down, breathe, and listen - and I get a response. Soft, thoughtful, connected.

Responsiveness comes when there’s trust.
When I’m fair, consistent, and patient.
When I listen just as much as I ask.

Reactivity? That’s on me.
It’s a reminder to do less, wait and listen more, and mean what I say.

šŸŽ Every interaction is a chance to build that trust, or break it.
And the beautiful thing? Horses will always show us where we’re at.

There’s no such thing as quick fixes when it comes to horses.

The time it takes, mentally, emotionally, or physically won’t look the same with every horse.

Taking the time, going at your horse’s pace, and creating a solid foundation is what leads to longevity.
But that doesn’t happen overnight.

It’s the small, consistent actions every day.
That 1%.
But when you’re in it, it’s not always easy to see.

So take a moment, pause, and reflect…
What’s different for you and your horse today compared to a year ago?
What are you proud of, and how do you both feel?

That’s the true measure of progress.
And it comes from small, consistent action.
