A little Halloween activity from us at Wild Roots! Halloween is most definitely my son's favourite time of the year, so it's the perfect time to try new spooky ideas!

We had fun creating our own potion bottles on a laminated sheet before writing our own magic spells.

My son took charge of the voiceover for this one, too!

I love activities like this because they’re a great mix of craft, imagination and learning. Starting with a fun idea gives children something to write about, helping them build vocabulary, think creatively and put their ideas into sentences. The best part is the learning is fun and purposeful!

And sometimes, a little bit of Halloween inspiration is all it takes to get the writing started.

I've used this resource SO much this week!
It's such a simple one but really useful across a variety of sessions and ages.

This has been used as a way to get things moving at the start of a session when maybe a little help is needed to get ideas flowing. It is also great when wanting to look at vocabulary and building language.

So why not give it a go at home!

Pick a category, set the timer and have a conpetition of how many words you can come up with.

I've applied for RHS Spring Malvern Show as part of their School Garden Challenge!

🎃 Creepy Creatures at Halloween Town 🎃

Come and join me for a special Halloween session! 👻

Something strange has happened in Halloween Town… the night-time creatures have disappeared!

During the session, children will find out all about real nocturnal animals and the amazing ways they survive after dark. We’ll then use those ideas to imagine and design a brand-new creepy creature of our own.

There’ll be a bit of drawing and writing, lots of talking and investigating, and then the best bit of creating their own 3D creature to take home. 🎃🦇

It’s a lovely chance to do something a little different for Halloween, with plenty of spooky atmosphere but still lots of learning and creativity woven in.

🌿 Something exciting is growing at Wild Roots! 🌿

I’m super excited to be working with Littledean Tap to bring you Wild Roots Learning Adventures
A new group for home educated children aged 4–8. 🤎

The aim is to create a safe, welcoming and fun environment where children can learn, play, create and build friendships with other home educated children.

Sessions will combine purposeful learning with plenty of opportunities to explore through play, practical activities and projects. We’ll build in reading skills, maths, creativity, discussion and social time, with support and challenge for children at their own level. 🌱

🌿 And it’s not just about the children…

One of the things we really wanted to create with Wild Roots Learning Adventures is a little bit of time for you, the parent, too.

While your child is busy learning, playing and making friends, you could catch up on some work, meet other home-ed parents for lunch, enjoy a coffee, or simply have a quiet moment to yourself. You could even use the time to plan and organise your learning activities for the week ahead!

Parents are asked to remain on site during the session, but you won’t need to stay in the learning area. Kids to bring their lunch to eat together.

🌱 TRIAL SESSION

📅 Thursday 22nd October
⏰ 11:30am–2:00pm
📍 Littledean Tap
💚 £25 per child

This first session is a trial, giving us all the chance to see how the group works and whether it feels like the right fit.

If it goes well, Wild Roots Learning Adventures will continue after half term in blocks, with our first block running from 5th November until 17th December.

It’s my birthday today! 🥳
So I thought I’d share a little freebie!

I’ve made a September Nature Hunt for children to take outside this month.

The idea is to get outside with a purpose. Designed to encourage investigating, exploring and then using what they find as a reason to write.

There’s also an extra little minibeast habitat challenge for anyone who wants to keep exploring! 🐞

🎃 My little pumpkin lover! 🎃

This boy has always been obsessed with pumpkins and all things halloween, so growing our own was inevitable when we got our land 🤣

These are our home grown zombie pumpkins and I think they’ve turned out amazing!

I genuinely would LOVE to have my own little pick-your-own pumpkin patch one day. A whole field of pumpkins, with all different shapes, sizes and colours, where children can come along with a wheelbarrow and choose their own. 🎃

It would be such a lovely autumn experience… and I think I’d enjoy it just as much as the children!

Rainy day activity! 🌧

My son is happiest when outdoors making his own adventures. So when the weather this week took a turn, it can be tricky to find activities that suit.

Then I spotted this idea being shared elsewhere and thought we’d give it a go… and it was a massive win!

He created his very own treasure map in a fun and exciting way. Once his map was finished, we took the learning a step further and made it a treasure map! He then wrote instructions on how to find the treasure.

So without it feeling like “writing practice”, he was actually:

🗺creating a map
🗺 using positional and directional language
🗺thinking about a sequence of instructions
🗺writing for a real purpose
🗺using his imagination
🗺and, most importantly, having fun!

He has already asked to do this again, which is always a good sign! 😂

It’s a lovely reminder that learning doesn’t always need to start with a worksheet. Sometimes giving children something meaningful to create, a little bit of imagination and a reason to write is all it takes.

A little tip for next time:
We’ll tea-stain the paper before using a marker. We started writing on ours first and the ink bled when we tea-stained it!

🔥 PS – Adult job: if you fancy burning the edges to give it that proper old treasure map look, please let an adult do this bit!
