🌿 Woodland Wizards

Another lovely Discovery Club session at Wild Roots.

We spent the morning exploring, investigating and getting creative as the children became woodland wizards for the day. There was plenty of imagination, lots of making, and some very creative ideas along the way.

These holiday sessions have been such a lovely part of the summer. It’s been really special watching the children become more comfortable with each other, seeing friendships grow and watching their confidence develop as the weeks have gone on.

I’ve really enjoyed seeing the children’s imaginations run wild and, most importantly, seeing them having fun together outdoors. πŸ’š

Better late than never...

We had so much fun at our Wild Roots Discovery Club session last week becoming Minibeast Explorers! πŸžπŸ”Ž

We headed outside on a minibeast hunt and discovered lots of different creatures to observe. We have plenty of grasshoppers in the field at the moment, so we spent some time watching them hop, jump and move through the grass.

We then became habitat detectives, exploring the different habitats minibeasts can live in and thinking about why certain creatures are suited to particular places.

To finish, every child chose their favourite minibeast and made it from clay before creating their own minibeast habitat using natural resourcesthey had collected.

The morning session filled quickly, so I opened up another chance to join us for Bird Guardians! TWO SPACES LEFT!

We'll spend the afternoon exploring the wonderful birds that live around us, becoming bird detectives as we investigate real feathers and a swallow nest, before creating our very own bird water station to take home and help wildlife in our gardens.

What a fantastic Treehouse Builders session!🌿

What a fun morning! We began by exploring lots of different treehouse designs, looking carefully at what made each one unique and discussing the features we liked best.

Next, we investigated different building materials, thinking about their properties and which would be best suited to building a strong, safe treehouse. The children then became architects, creating their own builder's blueprints before bringing their ideas to life by constructing a model treehouse from cardboard.

I have to say, I was so impressed with this group. This was definitely one of my more ambitious projects, but every single child stayed focused, showed brilliant problem-solving skills and demonstrated so much creativity. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as their treehouses began to take shape.

This photo is actually of my little boy's finished treehouse! We carried on building well into the afternoon after everyone had gone home, and it was so lovely to continue the project together. He was incredibly proud of what he'd created.

If your child managed to finish their treehouse at home, I'd love to see it! Please feel free to share a photo in the comments.

Getting children moving while they're learning can make such a difference to engagement. This simple dice game is one I come back to again and again.

Today we were practising tricky words. Roll the dice, land on a number and write the matching tricky word. Simple, active and effective!

The best part? You can adapt it to almost anything:
Spellings
Common exception words
Grammar
Phonics
Vocabulary

For example:
🎲 1 = Name a noun
🎲 2 = Write an adjective
🎲 3 = Think of a verb..and so on!

Sometimes the simplest activities are the ones children ask to play over and over again.

πŸ¦– What a fantastic Dinosaur Detective session!πŸ¦΄πŸ’š

What a great day with such brilliant learners! It was amazing to see everyone getting involved, asking thoughtful questions and throwing themselves into every activity. I always get so caught up in the fun that I forget to take photos, but I managed to sneak a few!

Here's what we got up to...

πŸ‘£ We started with a dinosaur footprint hunt, looking carefully to see if we could work out what type of dinosaur had made them.

⛏️ Next, we became palaeontologists, uncovering dinosaur bones hidden in the sand before working together to piece the skeleton back together.

πŸ” We explored real-life fossil photographs and dinosaur using our magnifying glasses, just like true dinosaur detectives.

🦴 Everyone then made their own clay dinosaur fossil to take home.

πŸ“– We learnt lots of fascinating dinosaur facts before creating our very own dinosaur fact files, thinking about habitats, diets and special features. We even used tape measures to discover just how enormous some of our dinosaurs would have been!

πŸ¦• To finish, we played a game of "What Dinosaur Am I?", listening carefully to clues before racing to the correct dinosaur. Then we ended with a hilarious dinosaur race, collecting a dinosaur and running back just like it would have moved!

There was so much laughter, teamwork and curiosity throughout the session. Days like this remind me why I love what I do. πŸ’š
