Summer Reading Challenge 2026

Join the FREE Reading Agency's Summer Reading Challenge 2026: Read to the Beat at any Havering library during the Summer holidays. It's delivered by The Reading Agency in partnership with public libraries and powered by Universal Music UK.

This year's exciting theme, "Read to the Beat," celebrates the powerful connection between reading and music. The challenge is designed to inspire children aged 4-11 to explore a world of stories, creativity, and rhythm through books, sparking imagination and building a lifelong love of reading.

How to Take Part
1. Register
From Saturday 4 July, you can register your child for the challenge by visiting any Havering library.
Bring your child's library card and speak to a member of staff
If your child is not yet a member, complete the online registration form
You'll receive a temporary library card number - bring this along with proof of parental name and address, and we'll issue a full library card.

2. Get Started
Once registered, your child will receive:
A Read to the Beat Collector Booklet
A Storytime Magazine
These will guide them through the challenge and track their progress.

3. Complete the Challenge
This year, children can choose how they take part:
Read 6 books, as in previous years
or
Swap in some of the reading-based challenges
Full details of the challenges are provided in the Collector Booklet, allowing children to make the experience their own.

4. Collect Rewards Along the Way
From Monday 20th July, they can return to the library to share what they've read or completed:
After 2 books / 2 challenges
→ Receive stickers and collector cards
After 4 books / 4 challenges
→ Receive the next set of stickers and collector cards
After completing the challenge (6 books / 6 challenges)
→ Receive:
◦ Final stickers and collector cards
◦ A certificate
◦ A medal
◦ Entry into a prize draw
Pre-school children will receive a gold sticker instead of a medal.

5. Deadline
To complete the challenge, please visit your library before 12 September.

Great British Summer Savings

Rising prices can make life's little treats harder to afford, especially during the school holidays when costs build up for families. This Government is determined to help, and that is why last month the Chancellor announced the Great British Summer Savings scheme.

From 25 June to 1 September 2026, the Government is temporarily cutting VAT from 20% to 5% on children's meals in restaurants, children and family tickets to cinemas, theatres, concerts and exhibitions, and admission to a wide range of attractions. Combined with free bus travel during August for children aged 5 to 15 in England, families and young people will be able to enjoy experiences that make summer special, including visits to the kinds of cultural and educational attractions that enrich children's lives outside the classroom.

This forms part of a broader effort by the Government to ease financial pressures on families. From ending the two-child limit and expanding free school meals, to rolling out free breakfast clubs and delivering 30 hours of free childcare, this Government is taking action to put more money back into parents’ pockets and give every child the best possible start in life.

As part of this campaign, we have launched an attraction finder website which allows families to type in their postcode and find participating venues near them to make the most of summer savings. To use the attraction finder, please visit https://summersavings.gov.uk.
