I have just signed up for Level 3 IFS (Internal Family Systems) for December 2026, and I couldn't be more excited 😊 I love training, learning from people who know trauma inside out. I think I will always be training in trauma in some form.

IFS has made a huge difference for me in the way I approach trauma. The philosophy is that we all have parts. All of us. We survive trauma in different ways, and different parts of us navigate the world after we have experienced trauma. Parts that work to keep us safe, to keep us functioning in every day life. Parts that shut-down pain, and parts that hold the trauma.

What has been your favourite training to date?

Just because we are 'technically' safe after a trauma, it doesn't mean we automatically shift to thriving. It often takes an awful lot of work in our nervous system to shift from survival to living, let alone thriving.

Thriving means to let our guard down (at times), to embrace life, to reconnect to ourselves, our bodies, our relationships. Thriving usually means we are in our element. We are at the top of our game, fully connected. Do we FEEL safe enough to let that in? What happens if we let our guard down, and something bad does happen?

What is your philosophy on working with the body in trauma therapy? Is it important? Does the method matter? It seems that there is a fair amount of contention between different kinds of trauma therapies. Top-down vs. bottom-up, polyvagal theory is debunked vs. validated by international renowned trauma theorists, CBT vs. EMDR, and so on. We clearly don't always "get on" in the field of trauma.

Personally and professionally, I believe that working with the body in trauma therapy is often a vital component. Why? Because trauma has such a huge impact on the body. It is where we carry it. And we can't really 'think' our way out of that.

If you want to learn more about the impact of trauma on the body, the autonomic nervous system, regulation, and somatic techniques, join our Foundation Diploma - Therapeutic Safety in Trauma (NCPS Quality Checked) per Sunday 6th September 2026, fully online. We have limited spaces available. You can find more information on https://www.beechtraumaacademy.co.uk/event-details/foundation-diploma-live-online-trauma-training-5

These findings help explain why the brain continues predicting danger after trauma — and could reshape how we understand and treat PTSD.

One of the hardest things to do when we work to recover from trauma, is to lower our metaphorical shields and to put the sword down.

Can we let people back in and truly connect? Do we dare risk getting hurt (in a non-trauma kind of way)? Are we not more vulnerable if we don't have a sword in our hands, ready to fight back whenever there is a hint of danger?

It can feel like monumental effort to put down the shield and sword. And remember: It doesn't have to be all or nothing. With some people, we may feel safer than with others. We can practice how much of ourselves we show to different people.

I have been doing rehab for a bank injury now for the last couple months, and sometimes I think rehab is not that dissimilar from trauma therapy:

🌴Sometimes healing takes real work, especially with repeated injuries.
🌴Healing hurts and it's uncomfortable (though it also does alleviate pain!).
🌴It takes several professionals working together (chiropractor, osteopath, Pilates) to heal.
🌴You have to invest in your health. How much more fun would it be to only invest in the fun things of life (like a holiday).
🌴Sometimes the work is about facing your fears: Picking something up from the floor fills me with dread!
🌴It takes effort to hold on to hope: We can get better.

So let's keep going, whether you are accessing trauma therapy, doing rehab, or training to be a trauma therapist!
