Raw Learning A therapeutic, well-being provision in a forest setting for suspected or diagnosed neurodivergent children 5-16. Pioneering change .

Providing decentralised education. Raw Learning is a friendly and welcoming alternative provision in Hockley and also covering the wider parts of Essex. We are a small community of dedicated, passionate teachers who want to ensure their provision is suited to children with specific learning difficulties and/or low self-esteem. We ensure that our alternative provision is a safe and caring place. We want all children to reach their full potential, irrespective of their individual needs. Our strongly held vision is that each child should be a confident and independent learner who is prepared to take risks now and in the future. Our pupils are encouraged to do their very best and our talented team of staff work hard to provide a curriculum that is engaging and challenging based on the children’s interests. We continually strive to provide the very best learning opportunities for the children’s development, which include art and equine therapies as well as outdoor experiences. We aim to establish good working relationships with parents and carers so that they are fully involved in the life of our alternative provision. If you are a parent thinking of sending your child to us you can be assured that you will be greeted by an enthusiastic member of staff.

Curiosity leads the way at Raw Learning 🌿

These photos capture moments of peace and happiness, with children directing their own learning and adults alongside them-listening, understanding and gently facilitating rather than taking over.

This is experiential learning: exploring, trying things out, asking questions and making discoveries through experience. There’s room to follow an interest, take a different route and see where curiosity leads.
We all bring baggage-our experiences, expectations and ideas about what learning “should” look like. At Raw Learning, we encourage adults to leave that baggage at the door and meet the child in front of them with openness and understanding.

Connection over coercion. Curiosity over control. Space to discover rather than pressure to perform. 💚

And when we embrace that approach, wonderful things happen.

🌿 A place to belong. A space to be yourself. 💚

Girls are travelling from across Essex to join our neurodivergent girls’ group at Raw Learning-to spend time together, build
friendships and find community.

If you haven’t lived it, it can be hard to understand how exhausting it can feel to be neurodivergent while navigating mainstream education.

The effort of fitting in, feeling misunderstood or getting through the school day can be difficult for others to see.

Here, our girls have space to just be. To be themselves, to feel free, to talk about what’s bothering them -and to laugh, have fun and enjoy being together.

There’s no expectation to squeeze themselves into someone else’s idea of who they should be.

Every child deserves an environment where their confidence can truly take **root**.

For children aged 5 and up, real self-assurance blossoms when academic progress goes hand-in-hand with emotional well-being. That is why our dual approach blends structured teaching with open-air discovery to nurture the whole child.

Academic Focus in the Hub

Inside our hub, learners receive dedicated, small-group formal education covering all core subjects, including English, maths, and science. This calm, focused space provides the consistency children need to tackle challenging topics, build foundational literacy and numeracy, and feel proud of their classroom achievements.

Growth in the Forest

Stepping outside into the woodland creates a nurturing social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) setting where personal development thrives. In the forest, children experience the freedom to:

- Lead their own investigations, building decision-making skills and authentic **autonomy**.

- Navigate calculated risks like den building, campfire cooking, and tool use to foster resilience.

- Regulate big emotions naturally through physical movement, fresh air, and calming sensory surroundings.

- Collaborate with peers without the pressure of rigid desk-based expectations.

Two Environments, One Journey

When a child masters a tricky fraction in the morning and successfully solves an outdoor construction problem in the afternoon, their perception of what they can achieve changes. The structure of the hub ensures academic progression, while the space of the forest gives them the agency to trust their own instincts.

In light of the work I am undertaking writing books about Raw Learning and the material I am developing in lots of different areas now, I am more than delighted that Raw Learning has been officially trademarked.

This mark represents a lot of admin which if I you know life as an ADHD’er is not a fun thing to do. Ever.

But it also represents the ability to be able to see what needs to be protected as a way of supporting children and the work that has gone into it.

Being neurodivergent means I often don’t know what proud feels like but this is a milestone to smile at.

There is nothing quite like the energy at our neurodivergent girls’ group! ✨

Every single session is shaped entirely by the girls themselves.

Whether they are diving into creative art projects, getting lost in play, or simply sitting together and chatting about their week, they always discover the most wonderful ways to relax, connect, and bond.

The atmosphere is truly wonderful.
With the autumn evenings drawing in and the days getting shorter, we switched on the fairy lights this week- making our space feel extra warm and welcoming! 💡💛

Sometimes the most meaningful learning happens when we step back and let our learners take the lead.

Today’s stimulus was a photograph of a low, brooding, grey sky. While the planned curriculum target was set, our learner felt the heavy, quiet atmosphere of the image deeply and asked if they could write about it during the week to truly match the mood.

When a young person shows us how they process the world, the best response is simply to listen.
Honouring sensory connections and individual pacing does not lower expectations-it invites authentic expression. The resulting writing captured the stillness and texture of an overcast day with a genuine personalised voice and depth.

Meeting learners where they are will always create richer outcomes than forcing a rigid plan.

We are more than happy to oblige when creativity leads the way. 🌧️✨

One story, and the whole group is transported. 💜🌿

Every face is focused, every imagination switched on - each of them building their own pictures as the tale unfolds.

Voices and accents. Perfectly timed pauses. A little bit of drama, naturally. 😂

Kes is not only a brilliant teacher and master of all things outdoors… it turns out, he is quite the storyteller too.

Learning doesn’t always need a desk, a worksheet or even four walls.

Sometimes, all it needs is a great story and someone who knows exactly how to bring it to life. 🌿

The flexibility of learning at RAW. 💜🌿

Sometimes learning happens outside in our forest, Sometimes it happens in our converted barn, with a view.

Today, it’s 1:1 support with Mr V in a calm indoor space - learning at the right pace, in the right environment, for the individual child.

Because learning doesn’t have to look the same for everyone.

That’s the beauty of RAW.
