Our Big Cooks got busy in the cabin after school today, creating their very own Southern-style chicken and chips! 😍

They mixed up a delicious seasoning to add plenty of flavour to their chips and chicken drumsticks before coating the chicken in breadcrumbs and popping everything into the oven to cook.

Who needs a takeaway when you can make your own from scratch? 🙌

Home Ed Bigger Cooks - Tuesday 11:00am

Our Home Ed Bigger Cooks got stuck into making their very own Southern-style chicken and chips today, and it smelled delicious! 😋

👩‍🍳 We mixed together our own tasty seasoning, ready to sprinkle over our chips and add to our chicken drumsticks before being coated in breadcrumbs.

There’s something special about making your own version of a takeaway favourite, knowing exactly what’s gone into it. 🙌

Our Bigger Cooks were busy in the cabin this afternoon whipping up their very own spaghetti carbonara, and it was lovely to see them creating a classic dish from scratch! 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

There’s something rather satisfying about making a meal yourself, and hopefully this is one they’ll be keen to recreate at home! 😋

🍝 Our Big Cooks were busy in the cabin this afternoon making their very own spaghetti carbonara from scratch.

We were lucky to get any photos at all because once the carbonara was ready, they gobbled it up for their tea! 😂

Definitely a recipe that went down well with our Big Cooks today!

🍝 Our Home Ed Bigger Cooks were busy in the cabin this morning making their own spaghetti carbonara from scratch.

Cooking is such a brilliant way to learn - combining practical life skills with maths, science, food knowledge and independence, all while making something they can actually eat.

And today’s finished carbonara? Pretty delicious! 🍝

Bigger Cooks - Friday 4:00pm

🐟 Our Bigger Cooks made a really easy, simple fish pie this week - although there were a few turned-up noses when they discovered what was on the menu! 😂

But then something rather lovely happened… They made it, tasted it… and actually really enjoyed it! 🙌

It’s a great reminder that we can’t always judge a food by what we think we’re going to like. Sometimes you just have to give it a go!

That’s such an important part of our Bigger Cooks lessons - discovering new flavours, trying different ingredients and learning about the foods we might not normally choose for ourselves. 👩‍🍳

Our Baking Club children got stuck in making these delicious broccoli & cauliflower patties.

We also took time to explore some green veggies. The taste testing was fun with many faces being pulled when the Brussel sprouts came out! 💚

🐟 Our Big Cooks were busy in the Cabin this afternoon making a quick and simple fish pie, but with a rather delicious twist – a different topping instead of the usual mash! 😋

It’s always lovely seeing our cooks realise that ingredients they once thought they didn’t like can actually be pretty tasty when they’re prepared in a different way! 🙌

While our fish pies were cooking, we chatted about sustainability and food miles – exploring how choosing food that hasn’t travelled as far can help reduce our impact on the environment. 🌱🌍

🐟 Today we made a simple fish pie with a seriously yummy crouton topping – and it went down rather well! 😋

Even those who weren’t particularly keen on fish were brave enough to give it a try… and the verdict was “it’s not too bad!” 😂 We’ll take that as a win!

While our fish pies were cooking, we had a great discussion about sustainability, where our food comes from and what we can do to reduce food waste. 🌱

Our Bigger Cooks got stuck into making our chilli con carne from scratch.

There was lots of discussion along the way about how we can adapt a recipe to suit different taste buds - from making it milder to adding extra flavours for those who like a little more spice. 🌶️

We also chatted about how we can bulk out recipes, make them go further and save portions for another day - an important skill when it comes to cooking independently and making the most of our food.

Plenty of chopping, cooking, tasting and learning… and a very tasty first session! 🍴😊
