Hello all.
As many of you will know by now, in addition to my martial arts training, and having visited the country of Japan 4 times so far, I also have a Japanese Shodō, who is also a teacher of Nihongo. (Japanese language) I have been studying under her since 2017, almost 10 years - her lessons have been invaluable and insightful. Sometimes I have to make corrections on things I see, to help further people’s understanding of the Japanese Language. Today I would like to mention the term “ Sensei”. A lot of you will be familiar with this term, with the tendency to refer to a teacher. If you break it’s correct form down, it means “one who has gone before”in others, in martial arts at least, it is generally applied to those who have trained for a number of years, and are now black belt holders. They have hopefully gained an understanding of the fundamentals and basics of their art and are now teaching others that same path of development, that they learned, hence why they are the “ one who has gone before”. As with all languages there is correct form, you could say, English is my mother language, yet I am still learning about its use and form, like most I make mistakes. As a student of Martial Arts, I am always learning and with the use of the Japanese language, I am very much still a student. That said, it is always best to be correct where possible from the beginning. When using terms like sensei we should always use the correct form, so as not to cause any misunderstanding or embarrassment, hence why we should always use “sensei” correctly. It is an honorific, meaning that whilst it is a way, or title, for others to address a teacher by, it is not a way that we should reference ourself. Instead we should only use the minimum of required titles. In Japanese culture, your name is most important, far more so than grade or experience. I hope this post clears that up.

A local karate instructor, has accepted an invite to join us for the NJJKR spring seminar on the 3rd of April 2027, at Champness hall, Drake street, Rochdale.
Jason Brierley 2nd Dan will be joining us to add some karate tuition to a great line up of instructors, teaching both traditional and modern Jujutsu and weapons and now Karate.

Regarding an earlier post, concerning the November seminars to be held with the head of the independent Meifu Shinkage Ryu, the present plan is take to Take Sensei around Manchester for some Sight seeing, including the Christmas Markets followed by an evening visit to a Japanese style Teppanyaki Restaurant in the heart of the city’s china town.

As many will know by now, next month sees the first ever Nihon Taihojutsu Renmei seminar to be held in the Manchester area, and in November, we we will be honoured to host the head of the Meifu Shinkage Ryu Shurikenjutsu for 2 seminars in Rochdale and Royton. Next year we will see our open spring seminar being held for thr first time in Rochdale.
The Seminar is held over 7 hours, with at least 4 instructors, from a range of schools and styles, sharing their knowledge of both Modern and traditional Jujutsu.
Like all NJJKR events this one is advance ticket booking only, to ensure the viability of such an event.
