🌿 Father's Day at Embers Outdoor Learning 🌿

Today we're celebrating all the dads, stepdads, grandads, foster dads, father figures and special people who encourage children to explore, take risks, build confidence and develop a love of the outdoors.

Whether it's helping to light a first campfire, joining in with muddy adventures, building dens, climbing trees or simply being there to share a flask of hot chocolate, these moments create memories that last a lifetime.

Thank you to all those who support children's outdoor adventures and inspire curiosity, resilience and a sense of wonder in the natural world.

At Embers HQ I'm so lucky to be surrounded by the best father, father in law and Dad to my own wildling so we wish you a wonderful Father's Day filled with fresh air, family time and lots of adventure. 🍃🔥

🌲 The Forest School Iceberg 🌲
I borrowed this brilliant image from and honestly feel like I need it printed as a giant poster!

Sometimes during a Forest School session you'll see me standing back, watching, occasionally being assigned the important role of "den guard" by the children. From the outside, it might look like I'm not doing very much.

But that's often exactly the point.

When a session is well set up, with engaging resources, meaningful opportunities, and children who feel safe and confident to explore, my role shifts from leading to observing. Beneath the surface, children are developing resilience, confidence, problem-solving skills, creativity, communication, risk assessment, teamwork, independence and so much more.

The den building, mud mixing, stick collecting and bug hunting are just the visible tip of the iceberg. The real learning is happening underneath.

So if you spot me standing quietly with a cup of coffee, don't worry - I'm not slacking! I'm watching children learn, grow and discover what they're capable of.

(Although I will happily spring back into action when the hot chocolate is ready! ☕🔥)

✨ Self-employed doesn't always mean working alone. ✨

One of the things I love about being self-employed is the flexibility to work from wherever inspiration strikes. While you'll usually find me in the woods, sometimes I swap the trees for a table at La Cocina.
Between planning sessions, replying to emails, writing risk assessments and dreaming up new adventures for Embers, having a welcoming shared workspace (and good coffee!) makes all the difference.
Running your own business can sometimes feel a little isolating, so it's lovely to have a place where ideas flow, conversations happen and productivity gets a boost.
Today it's laptops, lesson plans and coffee. Tomorrow it'll be campfires, mud kitchens and woodland adventures. 🌿☕💻

❓ What will our children create today?

Honestly... I have no idea.
And that's exactly the beauty of loose parts and open-ended play.

A pile of sticks might become a dragon's den. A collection of crates could transform into a pirate ship. Stones, ropes, mud and imagination can become almost anything.
When we step back and give children the freedom to explore, invent and create, we see problem-solving, collaboration, creativity and confidence flourish.

There are no instructions. No right or wrong answers. Just endless possibilities.
What might look like "just playing" is often where the deepest learning happens.

Today we’re celebrating the tiny pollinators that make such a huge difference to our world. From the wildflowers in the forest to the food on our plates, bees play an incredible role in keeping nature thriving. 🌼🌿

At Embers we love spotting bees buzzing around the woodland, teaching children to respect even the smallest creatures, and helping wildlings connect with the natural world around them. 💛

A few simple ways to help bees:
🌸 Plant bee-friendly flowers
💧 Leave shallow water out in warm weather
🚫 Avoid pesticides where possible
🌱 Let parts of your garden grow a little wild
