student sees the task in hand. I help them step by step from there. I teach at my home in Teddington, Middlesex, with all my books and papers to hand. I have exam practice papers and books on a huge range of subjects. So I always aim to choose something that will spark the interest of each individual student – and above all, to send them home in a good mood, ready to tackle the next step! Weekly, fortnightly or one-off lessons are available. For eleven years I taught full-time as a Secondary School English Teacher, right through from Year 7 to A Level. I am not currently teaching A Level, preferring to focus on Year 8, 9 and GCSE. Taught with a dash of imagination, this course flings open the doors of language and literature - not just for exams, but for life. I lend books and DVDs to help my students make their own discoveries. Their joys will be different from mine, their use of words different from anyone else’s. Playmobil Shakespeare, the Dramatic Irony Dinosaur and much more! Take a look here and subscribe so you don’t miss any: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCx9SDHb7xiUlyez_OStaKCA Whether I give a student an article about dinosaurs or a Japanese ghost story, the diary of a sailor or a Greek myth, I hope to engage their interest and enjoyment. Exam technique is crucial and I never forget this, but it doesn’t dominate every teaching moment. For example, if you look at the two texts on Language Paper Two as two people telling you something, the writing comes alive. Text A is a woman telling you about the day she watched an avalanche. Text B is a man describing a silent London after a fall of snow. See these two people and their situations. Then zoom in on how they have used words to affect your thoughts and feelings. This is a much livelier approach than just attacking both texts with a list of techniques! It works well for comparing two poems, two. Find the human element in what you read - the situation and what this writer or character believes about it. Don’t judge an exam paper by its cover. However, inside you may find a dying soldier, a murderous queen or a city on fire...For nine years I wrote about education for The Times Educational Supplement. So when I teach a student about how a piece of journalism has been structured and written for effect, I can do so with some inside knowledge. For example, writing an opinion piece is a bit like talking to your reader. Your vocabulary will be wider, though, and your use of language more adventurous than when you are talking, because you have more time to think! Once students understand this, it frees them up to write very well and achieve high marks on Language Paper Two.You can read my journalism archive here: www.catherinepaver.comand also on the Times Educational Supplement website here: https://www.tes.com/author/catherine-paverI have a PGCE and am a full member of The Tutors Association. This professional body carries out DBS checks before allowing tutors to join. They also provide their members with insurance. Browse up here on this page to get a sense of what my teaching is like.
