Driver fatigue in this week’s heatwave is a conversation many operators probably do not want to have with drivers. But we need to. A driver can be legally within their hours and still be fatigued. A clean tachograph record does not automatically mean the risk has been controlled. In extreme heat, ...

Bridge Strikes: Nobody Means to Hit a Bridge — But It Still Happens

No professional driver starts the day expecting to hit a bridge. Most bridge strikes are not caused by someone deliberately taking a reckless chance.

They happen because a system has failed somewhere: the vehicle height was not checked, the route was not planned properly, the load height changed, the in-cab height display was wrong, or the driver was diverted and left to make a decision under pressure.

That is why bridge strike prevention should not be treated as a quick reminder on a noticeboard. It needs to be part of daily walkaround checks, route planning, driver training, transport manager oversight and operator licence compliance.

Use our vehicle height calculator to convert feet, inches and metres, plus read practical UK bridge strike prevention guidance for drivers, operators and transport managers.

Sitting the Transport Manager CPC Case Study exam on Friday 24 April?

We are running our Exam Preparation Day tomorrow, Thursday 23 April, for delegates who want to give themselves the best possible chance of success before Friday’s exam.

This is not a large, generic revision session.

We only run a small group, which means delegates get a more focused session, better interaction, and the chance to really sharpen their exam technique before the Case Study paper.

We have a few spaces left.

If you want one final day to work through exam approach, timed practice, marking strategy, and the kind of answers the examiner is looking for, this is the time to get booked on.

I used to joke with mates that we did “dynamic walkaround checks”.

If the truck was still parked in roughly the same place we left it in the yard, we jumped in, fired it up, and waited to see if most of the warning lights went out.

If they did, we were good to go.

That sounds funny when you say it like that.

But looking back, it was not funny.

It was lazy.
It was risky.
And it was completely the wrong way to treat a daily vehicle check.

Because a daily walkaround check is not just a box to tick before the real work starts.

It is one of the most important safety checks a driver carries out all day.

And if it is done badly, rushed, guessed, or treated as a joke, the risk does not stay in the yard.

It goes out onto the road.

That is the uncomfortable truth.

A poor walkaround check can miss the exact defect that later becomes a roadside prohibition, an MOT failure, a collision, or something much worse.

Here are 5 hard truths every driver, operator, and Transport Manager needs to understand:

5. “No warning lights” does not mean the vehicle is roadworthy

The dashboard will not tell you everything. It will not show a loose wheel nut, a damaged tyre sidewall, insecure load equipment, missing spray suppression, a defective marker light, or a problem with the bodywork.

4. A ticked defect sheet does not prove a proper check was done

Paperwork only helps if it reflects reality. A nil defect report completed out of habit is not evidence of control. It is just evidence that someone filled in a form.

3. Drivers need to know what they are looking for

A proper walkaround check is not guesswork. Drivers need to understand what defects matter, what makes a vehicle unsafe, and when the vehicle must not be used.

2. Operators must manage the system, not just collect the sheets

Defect reports need to be reviewed. Repairs need to be recorded. Repeat defects need to be spotted. Drivers need feedback. If nobody checks the checks, the system is weak.

1. A bad walkaround culture becomes an operator risk

If the attitude in the yard is “jump in and go”, that is not just a driver problem. That is a management problem. Culture is evidence. And sooner or later, weak culture shows up in maintenance records, roadside stops, MOT outcomes, or DVSA investigations.

Daily walkaround checks matter.

Not because DVSA says so.
Not because the Traffic Commissioner might ask.
Not because the paperwork needs filling in.

They matter because they are one of the last chances to stop an unsafe vehicle going onto the road.

For the driver.
For the public.
For the operator.
For the Transport Manager.

Too many people still treat daily checks as a routine.

They are not.

They are a safety barrier.

And a safety barrier only works if people take it seriously.

13/04/2026

I used to secure HGV loads by touch.

Pull the straps tight.
Give them a shove.
Hope they stayed put.
At the time, I thought that was normal.

I look back on that and see exactly what it was:
guesswork dressed up as experience.

If you had asked me then to properly explain what a legally secure load was, I would not have been able to tell you.

Looking back now, that is a hard thing to admit.

Because as a Transport Manager, that mindset is not just rough around the edges. It is dangerous.

One of the biggest gaps in road transport is this:

A lot of drivers are shown what to do.

Far fewer are taught why it matters, what standard it has to meet, and what happens when it goes wrong.

And the reality is simple.
If a driver gets load security badly wrong and that failure leads to a serious incident, it is not just the driver in the frame.

The Transport Manager can be right there with them.
That is why load security has to be treated as a compliance issue, not just a practical one.

Here are 5 hard truths every operator, driver, and Transport Manager needs to understand:

5. Friction is not restraint
Weight alone does not secure a load. A heavy load can still move when braking, cornering, or hitting uneven ground. If you are relying on “it’s heavy enough not to move”, you are already on shaky ground.

4. Secure means meeting a standard
Load restraint is not about opinion. It has to meet the required force in the relevant direction of movement. If it does not, it is not secure. It is that simple.

3. Covering a load is not securing a load
A sheet, curtain, or net may help contain or protect a load. That does not automatically mean it is restrained. Containment and restraint are not the same thing.

2. A load can become unsafe during the journey
This is where multi-drop work catches people out. As weight comes off, load distribution changes. A vehicle that left the yard compliant can become unstable or overloaded on an axle later in the day if the load is not reassessed and re-secured.

1. Transport Managers are not removed from the risk
If the systems are weak, if the risk assessments are missing, if the training is poor, or if “learning by touch” is still the standard, then the problem is bigger than one driver. That is an operator and management failure.

This is exactly why proper load security matters.

Not because it sounds good in a policy.
Not because DVSA might ask questions.
Because when it goes wrong, the consequences are real.

For the driver.
For the public.
For the operator.
For the Transport Manager.

Too many people in transport still treat load security as common sense.
It is not.
It is physics, process, accountability, and risk.
