An early start for our UoR Malaysia Summer School participants this morning, as we set off for the coastal state of Malacca.
Our first stop was the historic Jonker Street! We explored the Chinese Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, then wandered through the street’s many shops and markets.
We then visited the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Red Square by, where Dutch colonial influences are visible today.
Finally, after a day of accumulating steps in the heat: some well deserved relaxation.
Only a few days left, it’s gone so quickly!

Home for the past few weeks has been the impressive University of Reading Malaysia!
Located in the Educity Iskandar, an education hub that brings together students from across the world. The students were struck by the blend of modern buildings and beautiful green spaces.
We have been warmly welcomed by colleagues and students here, enjoying a fantastic programme of lectures exploring Malaysian culture, the country’s business landscape, and even workshops from the School of Built Environment.
We also had the opportunity to visit the Iskandar Investment Berhad Experience Centre to learn more about the history of the Educity and insight into development of the thriving surrounding area.
More to come!

Did you know that the University of Reading Malaysia is just a short drive from Singapore? 🇸🇬
Our Summer School students started the day with an early bus ride to the Woodlands Checkpoint, where they crossed the border from Malaysia into Singapore.
Our first stop was the iconic Marina Bay where we took photos with the national mascot Merlion, and learnt about the impressive Business District which is open 24 hours a day. No trip to Singapore would be complete without a visit to Gardens by the Bay. Some students braved the OCBC Skyway, a bridge 22 metres above the ground (worth it for the gorgeous views!).
After learning the secret behind the striking blue rice at lunch, we headed to Chinatown and the vibrant Haji Lane. The students picked up souvenirs and treated themselves to gelato and cakes.
Safe to safely we’ll all be sleeping well after a packed day in Singapore!

Today’s adventures took our students to Desaru, the beautiful beach resort district on Malaysia’s eastern coast.
Our first stop was Desaru Fruit Farm, where our charming and very enthusiastic guide introduced us to the incredible variety of fruits and flowers grow in Malaysia. Along the way, we also encountered the resident animals; with some students proving braver than others!
All the exploring in the tropical heat does build up an appetite though, so we headed to a nearby restaurant and enjoyed a delicious seafood dinner before visiting the colourful 8 Chinese Temple Village.
And, lastly, what better way to round off the day than heading to a beach to soak up the golden sands and blue sea. University of Reading Malaysia University of Reading

Another exciting day on the UoR Malaysia Summer School. This time our travels took us to The Malay Cultural Village.
Students explored traditional Malay lifestyles, crafts and customs - they even got to put what they learnt to practice from painting their own batik designs to attempting the art of making teh tarik which is expertly poured between two cups. They even had a go stretching and flipping roti canai before joining in traditional Malay dancing.
The site was filled with lush greenery and fruits, like the durian and spiky rambutan! More exciting days ahead!

A huge thank you to the International Office, RUMSA and colleagues at UoRM for putting together a brilliant programme.
