Congratulations to everyone involved in this week's wonderful Congresso Internacional de Design da Informaçao ( ) – 10th International Congress on Information Design – organised by The Brazilian Society of Information Design. A fascinating programme, including contributions from many Reading alumni and our own Prof. Eric Kindel.

How do we know to stop at a red light and go on green? When did the uppercase Q come to mean ‘queue’? What is it about application forms that put us off? And why do we read novels but scan maps, peruse contracts, and glance at motorway signs? Information design is both timeless and timely.

In today's Baseline Shift talk "Making the invisible sensible", Arjun Khara talks about how design is not a switch to be flicked on and off, but a dial we turn and tune and constantly adjust until we get a clear signal.

Arjun is one of our doctoral researchers and also teaches across a range of projects on the undergraduate programme.

Keep an eye out for the post-talk blog (written by our students) on http://typography.network/baseline-shift/
