EDT As a not-for-profit organisation, we exist to increase the life chances of individuals by improving education and skills outcomes. Learning to change the world.

Education is one of the most powerful levers for change. When it’s equitable, evidence-informed and high quality it has the power to create opportunity for everyone. For nearly 60 years, we’ve partnered with governments, donor agencies and school networks across the globe to strengthen education systems, shape career pathways, and support people to thrive. From classrooms to communities, early years to adulthood, our work delivers meaningful impact that lasts. Driven by impact, powered by collaboration and innovation. We deliver customised solutions wherever we can make an impact. We take a system-wide approach to tackling educational inequality, removing barriers so every learner can access quality education and realise their potential. From girls’ education to displaced learners and those in crisis-affected settings, we design inclusive, sustainable solutions that answer real needs. By partnering across sectors and harnessing the potential of technology, we create impactful, scalable programmes and solutions that strengthen systems and develop capabilities in collaboration with the communities in which we work.

Teachers give so much to learners and communities. That's why it's vital that their profession is respected, valued, and supported.

Today, , marks 60 years of this recommendation from UNESCO on the status of teachers.

Over those same six decades, we've supported educators around the world to shape learning, strengthen schools, and improve outcomes. From Kenya to the UK, we thank them all for the passion, dedication, and hard work they bring to the profession every day.

Teachers: why do you love what you do?

Changing community's mindset doesn't happen overnight. It happens through conversations, Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) engagement and a shared story at a time. In Jigjiga, Facilitator Ubah Abdulkadir is helping transform her community’s perceptions of early marriage, with women alumni leading by example.

The Leaders in Teaching Ethiopia (LiTE) Program is a five-year initiative by the Mastercard Foundation implemented by Imagine1day INGO, Education Development Trust (EDT) and Geneva Global Ethiopia in collaboration with the Ministry of Education aiming to transform Ethiopia's secondary education into quality, equitable and relevant education system that enables students to advance in education and transition to the workforce.

As the National Careers Service transitions into the Department for Work and Pensions - DWP, we thank our National Careers Service colleagues for their extraordinary contribution to a service that has helped people to transform their lives for 14 years.

Across those years of delivery, we can reasonably estimate that our team supported a total of over a million adults, with up to 98% of customers expressing satisfaction with the service each year. Yet the true legacy of the National Careers Service extends far beyond the numbers.

Behind every progression outcome is an individual who has gained confidence, secured employment, returned to education, or taken a significant step towards a better future.

We recently explored five proposed education reform Bills that could shape the future of foundational learning in Kenya.

On Friday, those discussions moved into Parliament, with EDT and fellow INSPIRED partners joining education and civil society organisations to provide technical input as part of the public participation process.

Public participation is a vital part of developing effective legislation, helping to ensure new laws reflect the realities facing learners, educators, and education systems. We were delighted to see Andiwo Obondoh, EDT's INSPIRED Programme Team Leader, join partners in presenting these perspectives to Parliament.

Through INSPIRED, we support evidence-informed reform that strengthens education systems and improves learning outcomes across Kenya. The programme is delivered in partnership with the Ministry of Education - Kenya, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Aga Khan Foundation Sightsavers Think Equal Wajir Peace & Development Agency, and Voice of Peace for All (VOPA).

Last week, we brought together leaders across sectors for our ‘Getting to work, together’ roundtable in Sunderland.

Chaired by our CEO, Sarah Farquhar, the event explored what is already working and what needs to change in supporting people into employment, and how we can collectively strengthen pathways in the North East.

Participants agreed that our recent research reflected what they were seeing across the region, and joined us in calling for change.

With 17.5% of young people in the North East of England currently not in education, employment, or training (NEET) – compared to a UK-wide average of 13% – today's roundtable discussion in Sunderland comes at an important moment.

Our CEO, Sarah Farquhar, explains how bringing system leaders together for today's discussion, guided by our new research, contributes to tackling the NEET crisis both locally and nationally.

Great to see the progress being made through the Leaders in Teaching Ethiopia (LiTE) Program and the strength of collaboration behind it.

We’re proud to be working alongside Imagine1day, Geneva Global Ethiopia and the Mastercard Foundation, together with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labor and Skills, and regional education bureaus.

Just six months into implementation, it’s encouraging to see the programme building momentum towards strengthening education and creating better learning, skills and future opportunities for young people across Ethiopia.

Last week, our CEO Sarah Farquhar and our Director Sub-Saharan Africa Faith Nkala were warmly welcomed to Ejere Secondary School in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia. The school is one of many we are supporting through the Leaders in Teaching Ethiopia (LiTE) programme, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. LiTE is helping schools like Ejere Secondary School to strengthen their teaching and leadership, better preparing their students for transitions into further education or the world of work.

Together with LiTE Ethiopia Team Lead Tigist Tefera, Sarah and Faith spent the day engaging with teachers, parents, officials, and members of the local community, listening to their experiences and reflecting on the school’s progress. As part of the day’s welcome, guests were also invited to wear traditional dress.

The conversations were open, honest, and constructive. Alongside positive feedback on the support provided so far, participants shared valuable insights on where further improvements are needed. These discussions reinforced the importance of working in partnership with school communities to create lasting change, and ensuring that local voices continue to shape our work.

The day concluded with Sarah, Faith, Tigist, and other guests joining the school community in planting a tree in the school compound, as part of Ethiopia's national tree-planting initiative. It was a fitting way to end the day: a symbol of growth, opportunity, and a shared commitment to future generations.

Thank you to Ejere Secondary School for your generosity, openness, and hospitality, and to all those who shared their perspectives with us. Your experiences continue to guide our efforts to improve education outcomes across Ethiopia.
