📚 UKS2 Book Club | Building 11+ English Confidence
Looking for a fun, purposeful way to strengthen your child’s English skills ahead of the 11+?
Our UKS2 Book Club is designed to develop the skills children need to become confident, thoughtful readers — while also supporting their preparation for both English Comprehension and Verbal Reasoning.
Each week, children will explore high-quality, challenging and engaging texts, with every half term alternating between a classic and a modern text. Alongside our reading, we’ll focus on:
✨ Inference skills – reading between the lines and using evidence to justify ideas
✨ Authorial intent – understanding why an author has made particular choices
✨ Vocabulary development – with weekly vocabulary and spellings identified from the text sent home to learn
✨ Comprehension skills – developing accuracy, depth and confidence when responding to questions
✨ Verbal reasoning skills – building the vocabulary, language and analytical thinking that support 11+ success
We highly recommend this for Year 5 children, particularly those working on their 11+ preparation.
We know that comprehension can be one of the most challenging areas for children and it is an area where many children can lose valuable marks. Strong comprehension isn’t simply about reading quickly — it’s about understanding deeply, interpreting meaning and being able to explain your thinking.
Our aim is to make that practice challenging, engaging and enjoyable — while building skills that children can carry across their wider English work and into the 11+.
