Of the many mistakes I have made over the years in practice, this is perhaps one of the 'easiest to avoid' ones.

Saying less, listening more and meeting parents where they are at is such a simple, yet underutilised skill.

Have you done this before? Or is it just me?

Many Chiropractors that I mentor do mention that they are unsure of how much information to give parents, especially at a Report of Findings session and now, having made my mistakes I help them through my 7E Framework to hit the mark a lot easier with sharing and educating, rather the overwhelming.

**Do you really need to test EVERYTHING in a baby’s New Patient examination?**

This is something I see so many paediatric chiropractors struggle with.

You’ve done the courses.

You’ve learnt the different assessment techniques.

You’ve got a head full of things you *could* check.

So when that tiny baby arrives for their first appointment, it can be very tempting to try to fit ALL of that knowledge into one examination.

But more testing doesn’t necessarily mean a better examination.

The skill is knowing **which information you actually need** and how to gather it in a way that makes sense for *this* baby.

A well-structured paediatric NP examination should help you:

🔹 Understand the baby’s presenting picture
🔹 Gather appropriate outcome measures
🔹 Rule out red flag concerns
🔹 Build a working diagnosis that fits with your case history and findings
🔹 Give you a clear foundation for your Report of Findings

And just as importantly, it needs to work in the real world.

With a baby who may be unsettled. With parents watching and asking questions. With a limited appointment time, and without you feeling like you’re frantically trying to remember every assessment you’ve ever learnt!

The answer isn’t necessarily **more tests**.

It’s having a **clear clinical flow** that helps you decide what is relevant, what is necessary and what comes next.

This is exactly what I teach within the **Engagement Module of my Paediatric Practice Toolbox**, where we look at how to structure your New Patient examination for babies and older children in a way that is comprehensive without becoming overwhelming.

On this very day last year I was getting ready to record my presentation with the lovely Dr Krista Burns for Peds Week Online. The only problem being I couldn't work out the blimmin' time difference!!

Better an hour early, than an hour late right!?

Time differences are hard…

When did you last ask a parent to share their experience as a testimonial?

If this isn't something you regularly do - ask yourself why not??

If a child is doing amazing under care and the parents are happy, why not ask if they could share their experience to help other parents realise that there is help out there?

I challenge you to ask 2 patients/parents this week, and if they say no, that's ok.

What if they say yes though??

More people hear about you and how you can help their families... I think that's a win for sure 🥰
