The Connection Between Menopause & Driving Anxiety 🚗💜

Have you suddenly found yourself feeling anxious behind the wheel, despite years of confident driving?

You're not alone.

For many women, perimenopause and menopause can bring unexpected symptoms such as increased anxiety, panic, reduced confidence, brain fog, and heightened sensitivity to busy roads, motorways, or unfamiliar journeys. Hormonal changes can affect the brain chemicals involved in regulating mood and our body's stress response, making driving feel overwhelming when it never did before.

The important thing to remember is this:
✨ It's real.
✨ It's more common than you think.
✨ There is support available.

At Drive Therapy®, we understand that driving anxiety isn't simply about driving—it's about how thoughts, emotions and behaviours have become linked to being behind the wheel. Our specialist Drive Therapy® courses combine CBT, behavioural change techniques and coaching to help you rebuild confidence and regain your independence.

If menopause has changed the way you feel about driving, you don't have to struggle in silence.

🚗 Could your "safe" driving habits actually be making your anxiety worse?

When we're feeling anxious behind the wheel, it's natural to do anything that makes us feel safer. But some of these safety behaviours can actually keep driving anxiety going.

Examples include:

🔸 Avoiding motorways or busy roads
🔸 Only driving with someone else in the car
🔸 Holding the steering wheel so tightly your hands ache
🔸 Constantly checking mirrors out of fear of making a mistake
🔸 Taking long detours to avoid roundabouts or junctions

While these behaviours may reduce anxiety in the short term, they can stop you from building confidence and proving to yourself that you can cope.

At Drive Therapy®, we help you recognise these behaviours, understand why they happen, and replace them with healthier, confidence-building strategies using a combination of driver coaching, behavioural change techniques and CBT-informed approaches.

✨ Confidence doesn't come from avoiding your fears—it comes from learning you can handle them.

“Are we nearly there yet?”

It’s the soundtrack to family road trips every summer.

Whether you’re heading to the beach, the zoo or visiting family, your tyres have an important job to do, helping you accelerate, brake, steer and corner safely throughout the journey.

Before setting off, give them a few moments of attention by checking their Air Pressure, Condition and Tread.

Then you can get back to focusing on making memories together this summer.

🐒 The Monkey Mind and Driving Anxiety 🚗

Have you ever noticed how your mind can race before or during a drive?...

"What if I end up in a situation I can't manage?"
"What if I panic?"
"What if I make a mistake?"
"What will other drivers think?"

This is often called the "monkey mind"—the part of our brain that jumps from one anxious thought to another, creating imaginary worst-case scenarios before anything has even happened.

The problem is, your brain doesn't always distinguish between a real threat and an imagined one. The more attention you give these thoughts, the more convincing they become, increasing your anxiety behind the wheel.

The good news? You are not your thoughts.

Learning to notice these anxious thoughts without believing or fighting them is a powerful step towards becoming a calmer, more confident driver. Instead of letting the monkey mind take control, you can learn to focus on what is actually happening on the road in the present moment.

At Drive Therapy®, we help drivers understand the psychology behind driving anxiety and teach practical strategies, including CBT-based techniques, mindfulness and behavioural change, to break the cycle of fear and avoidance.

💭 Remember: Thoughts are not facts. They're simply mental events—and they don't have to dictate how you drive.

If driving anxiety is holding you back, support is available 🤝.
