The places where we live, work, and play are an integral part of our well-being and happiness. Likewise, the quality of the places we inhabit—where we form bonds and a sense of community heavily affects our satisfaction and outlook in life. What are the opportunities for architecture and architects to engage?

I am extremely excited that my latest book "Trans-Atlantic Engagements" has just been released by ORO Editions.
It demonstrates the historically significant contribution German-educated architects have made and continue to provide to US architectural education, which frequently brings about a cultural change in design thinking and pushes the limits of sustainable design.
- What a wonderful way to start the New Year!
Wishing you all Merry Christmas!

The book has a preface by Peter Bosselmann (UC Berkeley) and Alexander Eisenschmidt (Chicago). 220 pages.
Publisher: ORO Editions, San Francisco, 2021.

The book traces the history, impact and contribution of pedagogical concepts of German-educated professors of architecture at schools in the United States. It makes a contribution to the understanding of architectural education in the US and its historical cross-fertilization with German educational concepts at large. The ideals of the Bauhaus shaped more than just design and architecture around the world; its guiding principles and pedagogy transformed design teaching. The study examines how the model has evolved over the last eighty years, features conversations with selected educators, and explores what the legacy of Gropius and Mies van der Rohe means for educational strategies and design teaching today.

Dr. Michael J. Monti, Executive Director of the ACSA, Washington, D.C., said “There is a need for more analytical histories of architectural pedagogy to advance the understanding of how to educate the next generation of architects, and the ACSA endorses this book. It investigates the influence of German educators on US architecture schools and on architectural pedagogy over the last eighty years, featuring profiles and interviews with current professors; it explores how two pivotal German architects and educators—Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Ludwig Hilberseimer—influenced contemporary educational strategies and shaped their relevance.”
