A good trick to look out for

I’ve seen a few posts redirecting the 15 Minute City conspiracy theory recently. Here’s a nice synopsis of what sparked the paranoia

A neat little example of the current problems at the CDC in the US

Why on earth is RFK Jr spreading total nonsense about şpęrm counts of teen boys, circumcision, puberty in girls, etc!? 😱

Can you imagine the IRB committee's response to a research proposal like this!? 😳 "We just want to check şpęrm counts of teen boys. We'll get parental consent to ask them to 💦 into cups, so we can check their fertility." NOPE 🚫👎🙅‍♀️⛔️

There was one study I found that did do şpęrm counts for adolescents, but it was to look at the impact of varicoceles, which can affect fertility, and they only had 50-something participants, which is high considering the logistics of such a study! Definitely no big studies looking at overall counts for "average teenagers"!!

And "puberty" isn't one event, so the endpoint that can be measured is age of menarche or 1st period. The mean age of menarche (MAM) HAS decreased over the last 100+ years, BUT ALL OVER THE WORLD, not just the US, largely because of better nutrition and overall health! And the decrease was 2-4 years over 100+ years.

In the US, the MAM decreased by *6 MONTHS* from the 1950's to early 2000's, NOT 6 years! 🤔

Further decreases in age over time may be related to higher rates of childhood obesity, etc, so it's worth investigating. But that doesn't mean making up crazy false statistics to drive conspiracy theories! 🤬

Those of us who are on social media for health education and science communication will keep on calling out RFK Jr's misinformation, because we still believe in rigorous, data-driven health recommendations! We all deserve that. We wouldn't let people make 💩 up about how planes work and how to safely fly them! Why would we let someone lead our healthcare system and dismantle public health who doesn't understand basic health or research principles!? 😩

Trying to keep politics out of this page but when RFK makes a public pronouncement that sounds highly suspect there is a reason for that…

Considering the prominence in yesterday’s news of the Paloma Shemirani case at the Maidstone coroners court you may find the latest episode of the excellent Mariana in Consouracyland podcast of interest discussing how her mother, a prominent anti-vaxxer, influenced her to refuse chemotherapy for her non-Hodgkin lymphoma

Just a reminder for the American administration that correlation does not imply causation…

At Portsmouth SitP we are non-political however a local MP has a petition going to ban the evils of gay conversion therapy which is an ideal that SitP wholeheartedly endorses so we ask that you consider taking a look:
