🩡 Day 2 - What is Down syndrome? πŸ’›

Down syndrome is a genetic difference caused by having an extra copy of chromosome 21.
It happens naturally at conception, is the most common genetic difference across the world, and babies with Down syndrome are born to parents of all ages, races and religions!

There are 3 types of Down syndrome:

🧬 Trisomy 21:
The most common type. Every cell has an extra copy of chromosome 21.

🧬 Translocation Down syndrome:
An extra part or whole copy of chromosome 21 becomes attached to another chromosome.

🧬 Mosaic Down syndrome:
Only some cells have an extra copy of chromosome 21, while other cells have the typical number.

✨ Whichever type someone has, they have Down syndrome.
The type doesn’t define who they are, and every person with Down syndrome is unique 🌟
