Expressing Opinions - Negatives

Wythnos diwethaf, we looked at the positive opinion sentence patterns, so it is only fair that we also look at the negatives too. Our "hate" phrases follow a similar pattern to those we saw with "love" - we have more than one way of saying it, although varying levels of emotion tend to be implied within each sentence.

Whilst these are some of the more commonly used sentences, they are not the only ways of expressing your dislikes - think "Dw i ddim yn gallu dioddef ..."/"I can't stand ..." on Duolingo.

As there are so many of you now on this page (diolch 💗!), I'm currently looking at how I can change my content to suit learners across varying stages of their taith iaith. I am aware that I am currently discussing language used at quite a basic level and appreciate that that may not be useful to everyone.

“Achos mae’n…” / “Oherwydd mae’n…” are really useful phrases to learn because they allow you to give a reason and extend your answer rather than stopping after a simple statement like "Dw i'n hoffi..."

Being able to give reasons helps you turn short answers into longer, more developed sentences, which is especially useful when speaking and writing. Learning a range of adjectives, especially those that can be used in multiple contexts, is essential to using these phrases.

What adjectives do you know, positive or negative, that could be used after these phrases? Let me know in the comments.

Even though the verb "dwlu" on its own means "to love", it always has to be paired with the word "ar" in order to say that we love something, e.g. dwli ar siocled, dwli ar chwaraeon, dwli ar ddarllen.

Missing prepositions, or not using them because a verb means exactly what you want it to, doesn't always work yn Gymraeg. Set pairs of verbs and prepositions are used quite often and if you're familiar with your prepositions, you'll probably have already noticed some of these pairs for yourselves.

Expressing Opinions - Positives

In Tuesday morning's post, I asked you the question "Beth dych chi'n hoffi coginio i de/swper?". Whilst I've used the verb "hoffi", that doesn't mean that you have to use it in your response to the question.

As with English, we have more than one way to express our likes, although yn Gymraeg it can be a little more complicated at times. The English verb "love" is conveyed in several different ways yn Gymraeg so the subtle differences are explained here. A number of Welsh speakers will use "lyfo" or "lyfio" as a Wenglish style alternative of these too, so don't worry too much about the semantics!

Diolch o galon to everyone who has contacted me of late about Welsh tuition in readiness for the new academic year. I really appreciate all of the interest and support. 💚

At the moment, my tuition diary is fully booked for the foreseeable future, so unfortunately I’m not able to take on any new learners at present.

✨ If you are already learning with me, your lessons are not affected.

✨ If you have already contacted me to enquire about tuition but are not yet booked in, please don’t worry — your place is secure until I hear from you that you no longer want/need it.

If we're talking about our daily routine, it's always useful to know the days of the week, but did you know that we sometimes omit the word "dydd" from our phrases even though "day" remains in the English translation?

Whilst removing the word "dydd" from phrases related to mornings or afternoons is optional (although often used when speaking), we have to remove the word "dydd" for anything done of an evening in order to make it grammatically correct.

Have you noticed this previously? Let me know where you've seen or heard these phrases in the comments.
