This week, Year 3 and 4 started their exciting new music unit, Castles!
As part of our learning, we explored the pulse and rhythm of chants inspired by the castles built after William the Conqueror came to the throne in 1066. We discovered that nearly 1,000 castles were built during his reign and that builders often used pulse and rhythm to help coordinate their work and keep everyone working together.
The children had great fun creating and performing their own chants while developing their understanding of pulse and rhythm. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm, creativity, and teamwork in action.
Check out some of our chants! 😊

Last week, our Year 5 and 6 pupils enjoyed an exciting and inspiring visit to Plymouth Marjon University, gaining a valuable insight into higher education opportunities right here in our local area.

During their visit, the children took part in an interactive campus tour, learned about student life, and explored the many opportunities available at university. They also had the chance to use specialist sporting equipment and receive coaching from experienced sports coaches, making the day both educational and fun.

The visit encouraged our pupils to think about their future aspirations and the many pathways available to them as they continue their learning journey.

We are incredibly proud of how well the children represented our school throughout the day. They were respectful, engaged, and exceptionally well behaved at all times, demonstrating excellent manners and a positive attitude.

A huge thank you to Plymouth Marjon University for providing such a memorable and inspiring experience!

πŸŒΏπŸƒ Despite the rainy weather, our Foundation children have thoroughly enjoyed three fantastic Forest School sessions this week!

On Monday, the children explored weaving using natural materials, carefully working over and under to create their own wonderful designs.

πŸ§šβ€β™€οΈ On Tuesday, they created magical fairy doors for the meadow and made their own magical potions by collaging natural materials into potion jars.

🐞 On Wednesday, the children designed and built bug hotels using plastic bottles filled with natural materials. These have now been placed outside, ready for local insects and bugs to enjoy and make their home.

The children showed fantastic creativity, perseverance and enthusiasm throughout all of the activities, embracing outdoor learning whatever the weather! β˜”πŸŒ±

πŸ’‘βš‘ In DT, our Year 3 and 4 children have started an exciting new unit all about creating moving pictures with an electrical component!

Yesterday, the children explored simple electrical circuits, using batteries and small light bulbs to make their circuits work. They enjoyed investigating how electricity flows and seeing their bulbs light up through their successful connections.

This was a fantastic introduction to the project, and we can't wait to see their moving picture designs develop over the coming weeks!

Well done, Year 3 and 4! πŸŒŸπŸ‘

In DT, our Year 1 and 2 children became smoothie taste-testers for the day!

The children had lots of fun sampling a range of different smoothie flavours and sharing their opinions with the class. We discussed the different ingredients, flavours and textures, helping us think about what makes a successful smoothie.

⭐ The clear favourite was the strawberry and banana smoothie, which was a huge hit with the children!

🍏πŸ₯πŸ₯’ The green apple, kiwi and cucumber smoothie was a little more adventurous and wasn't quite as popular, but everyone was willing to give it a try and share their thoughts.

We were so impressed with the children's enthusiasm and willingness to taste something new. Well done, Year 1 and 2! πŸ‘

πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ… On Wednesday, a group of 18 KS2 children attended the PSSP Primary Athletics Even at Brickfields.

The children took part in a range of running races and throwing activities, demonstrating determination, resilience and excellent sportsmanship throughout the day. After giving their all in the running heats, an impressive 5 children qualified for the finals! 🌟

We were also delighted to receive a silver medal in the Vertical Jump competition! πŸ₯ˆ
All of the children worked incredibly hard, behaved impeccably and represented Thornbury brilliantly. We are extremely proud of each and every one of them for their fantastic effort and achievements.

Well done, Team Thornbury! πŸ‘πŸŽ‰
